Dear Ms. Patti Melvin,

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to you for the religious objects (Rosaries, Scapulars, medals, holy pictures, etc.) that you send to Sierra Leone and especially to the Archdiocese of Freetown for distribution among the faithful to help them to pray more fervently and with greater devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I have witnessed several times the distribution of these religious objects among the faithful in the parishes and outstations by Juliana Tommy, your representative here. On some occasions, I have also assisted her to carry cartons of the religious objects to the other dioceses in the provinces.

On behalf of the recipients of the religious objects, and on my behalf, I thank you sincerely for the support of the Universal Living Rosary Association for contributing to the promotion of the Marian devotions in our Church here in Sierra Leone, and particularly in the Archdiocese of Freetown, of which I am presently the resident bishop. I pray that God may continue to bless you and all the members of the Association as you continue to promote devotion to Our Lady in Sierra Leone and in other parts of the world through the distribution of Rosaries and other religious objects associated with pious devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

May Mary, Our Mother and Help of Christians, intercede for you and all the members of the Universal Living Rosary Association for the Grace of health of mind and body, and continuous growth in faith in Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

With sincere best wishes, I remain,

Devotedly yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Edward Tamba Charles

Love for Love!
Folly for Folly!
Heart for Heart!

Dear Apostle of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Thank you so much for your very generous donation at this time. We are witness to incredible pressures in our own country which greatly affect our lives and, abroad, entire Nations are bathed in blood. We have in our hands those spiritual weapons which will repair evil and obtain for the world everlasting peace. God is Good!

Love is the Law of the Gospel. Christ loved us as Our Redeemer not only in spite of our iniquities, but because of them, and without the least merit on our part. He calls to us with a voice of supplication:

“Let Me in, I am Love and Peace Let Me in, I am Love and Peace”

We reply, ‘Yes Lord, but not just now, I am worried about my welfare, my goals; I cannot waste a moment, each second is precious, I am close to success, come back another day.’

Christ comes again, ‘I have come back, hungry for your love; like a poor beggar, I hold out my blood-stained Hand. But, I plead in vain.’

Suddenly, we meet with misfortune and fall into worry, anxiety and poor health. Christ comes again feeling this is an opportune time for us to be open to His knocking:

‘Open to Me. It is I, be not afraid, I am the Consoler.
I am Jesus, your one sure Friend in days of darkness.
Open to Me, I am Mercy.’

The door is then cracked open, and He is bid to return again after the insomnia and pain have passed, at present it is not possible! This is a sad and harrowing story, but alas one very true. Jesus will not force us; for what He seeks is our love. Love is not loved. He does not rule over slaves, but seeks the love of sons and daughters, joint-heirs of the Savior by divine right, although we hardly merit such a title. God is Love, all perfection here below. All reward in Heaven is simply love! No virtue is so strong and virile as love. The great desire to love is within the reach of everyone. Our will to love must be generous and resolute. There is a lack of apostles today because there are so few aglow with love and zeal. Many do good works and labor with goodwill, but how many will exchange hearts with their suffering Savior? Long to be an apostle and do not dwell upon your faults or become discouraged. Plunge yourself into the boundless sea of the Love of the Heart of Jesus!

One with you in the Heart of Mary!

Patti Melvin

HOLY MOTHER THE CHURCH, MY MOTHER, HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU!

True Disciple of Jesus Christ, authentic Daughter of Holy Mother the Church, Mother of the Missions! These are the titles which have been awarded to Pauline-Marie Jaricot by the Holy Pontiffs. Cardinal Tomko venerated Pauline as “a great figure of the Universal Church and of Lyon.”

As a disciple of Jesus Christ, Pauline reached the summit. All of her interior life and her active life were founded upon the magnificent impetus of a great love: The Love of Jesus Christ. The fire that Christ had lit within her heart could not be extinguished. As soon as she turned from the glitter of the world, she lived in her person the Passion of Jesus Christ for God’s glory and the Triumph of Holy Mother the Church. Her heart burned with love for the glory of Christ and His Holy Church.

What was the Church for Pauline? The ecclesiastical hierarchy, indeed! She remained in constant communication with the priests, bishops and Rome for the work of the Living Rosary. Cardinal Villecourt supported her all the days of his life. Cardinal Lambruschini, Nuncio of France, helped her by his constant prayers and called her “dear daughter.” He was the first to give his formal blessing to the Living Rosary. Pope Gregory XVI visited her at the Trinite de Mounts in Rome while she was gravely ill. He received her several times in private audience, and gave her authorization to build a chapel dedicated to St. Philomena on her property at Lorette. Pope Pius IX, moved by the distress of her unjust loss of fortune and property, intervened in her favor. It was Pope Leo XIII, who in a brief of June 1881, brought to light the “exalted pious virgin whose memory is a blessing to the Universal Church.”

Pauline had a great veneration for the Priesthood and those who represented it. The sanctification of the priesthood was one of her constant thoughts and the subject of her earnest prayers, for she fully realized how important it was that those whose mission it is to teach holiness to others should themselves live holy and blameless lives in God’s sight. “Pauline united the two most powerful weapons with which to conquer the heart of God and that of man … unlimited self-sacrifice and ardent charity.” … Fr. Ramiere SJ. The Church is a visible society, but She is not reduced to Her visible appearance. An invisible principle is within Her. Christ is Her Chief. She is the Bride of Christ, His Mystical Body. Christ came to set the earth on fire. Our Blessed Lord transmitted this fire that it might embrace the hearts of mankind. How blessed are the children of the Holy Catholic Church, all the resources of divine mercy belong to them! Man is rendered participant to the Life of God by the ministry of the Church. The Church is the depository of the merits of Jesus Christ. She is powerful! She can sanctify and bless all. Christ lives in Her. Clothed in the Sun of Justice, the ardor of Christ’s charity, the splendor of His Truth, the whole of His Life of Grace rests in Her. Down through the centuries, She lives with a youth that is renewed by the Blessed Eucharist. She is Holy. Never have any doubt! The Church is always the faithful and dear Spouse of Christ. She is holy and impeccable to His Eyes. Had She ever ceased to be holy, the world would cease to be, because the world and all that exists in Her regard, exists alone within Her. She alone gives birth to the Saints. The Church is the SECOND Glory of Jesus Christ. The FIRST Glory of Christ is Mary: Preserved from Original Sin, chosen to be His Mother, and to be the Mother of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church! Mary and the Church receive their beauty from Christ as the moon receives the clarity of its rays from the sun.

Glory Be To Jesus Christ

Dear Apostles and Benefactors of the Living Rosary,

Advent is the season of the seed and the secret, the growth of Christ, Divine Love, in silence hidden within Mary. She had nothing to give Him but herself. He asked for nothing more. Working, eating and sleeping, She was forming His body from hers. If we have truly given our humanity to be changed into Christ, it is essential to us that we do not disturb this time of growth. It is a time of faith. We do not see Christ’s radiance in our lives yet, it is still hidden; nevertheless, we must believe that He is growing in our lives. We must relate everything to this incredible reality. When a woman is carrying a child, she is absorbed into the life within her and folds herself like a tent around the child’s frailty. It is a God-like instinct to cherish and to bring forth a life.

During Advent, let us contemplate the life within us. May our hands be Christ’s Hands in our life; that our service may let Christ serve through us; that our patience may bring Christ’s patience back into the world! By His own Will, Christ was dependent upon Mary during Advent. He was absolutely helpless; He could go nowhere but where She chose to take Him: Her breath was His breath; Her heartbeat, the beating of His Heart.

Today, Christ is dependent upon men. In the Host, He is literally put into man’s hands. A man must carry Him to the dying, must take Him to prisons and must carry Him into battle. During Advent, we must carry Him in our hearts to wherever He wants to go and there are many places He could never go unless we take Him there. Let us carry Christ to our work place, to the battleship, airfield or camp. It matters not that we are unable to say a word, but it is of great value, because we carry Him there with us. Christ visited this place, silent and helpless, dependent upon a creature and, but for us, Christ would not have been there. Our Lady’s Advent is clearly seen in the Visitation. Mary rising up in those days went with haste to the hill country. We can feel the rush of warmth and kindness, the sudden urgency of love that sent the Mother of God hurrying over the hills to help her cousin. If Christ is growing in us and we are at peace and recollected, it is because we know that however insignificant our life seems to be, from it He is forming Himself; if we go “in haste” to wherever our circumstances compel us, because we believe He desires to be in that place, we shall find that we are driven more and more to act on the impulse of His Love.

Pray without ceasing and contemplate with a growing awareness that Christ is being formed in your life. We must trust Him for this, as it is not yet time to see His Face; we must possess Him secretly and in a hidden way, fold our love upon Him, surrounding, holding and nourishing the Seed! We will feel the quickening of His own Life in our hearts. To all who are suffering, remember this is a time of growth, hiding and waiting. Trust that Christ is growing in your sorrow and, in due season, all will give place to splendor and peace. We must never forget that it is the Holy Spirit Who sows this Christ-seed in us, and the Spirit of Wisdom, Light and Truth is given in many ways. We live in an age of impatience. We ought to let everything grow in us, as Christ grew in Mary. There are some things that refuse to be violated by speed and that demand their proper time of growth.

Today in many souls, Christ asks that He may grow secretly and that He may be the Light shining in the darkness. During the Season of Advent, let our waking, working, eating, sleeping and whole life, be for us a formation into Christ.

Jesus living in Mary,
Come and live in me!

One of the saddest facts of life is that the living so soon forget the dead: We forget when we live; we are forgotten when we die!

This month of November, we are offering the thirty days of Requiem Masses for the reposed members of the Living Rosary Family. The suffering of the souls in Purgatory is so great that a single day seems like a thousand years. They need our help in order to obtain Heaven. May God bless you abundantly with many graces for arranging these Sacred Masses for them!

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen.

I impart to you all, my priestly blessing:

+ In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Dear Apostle of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,Your overwhelming kindness to us for the great work of Ven. Pauline Jaricot, in the world today, is a dynamic force for the salvation of souls and restoration of the Reign of Christ the King.

We are deeply grateful for your sacrifice, apostleship and love. During the month of November, a special Novena of Holy Masses has been arranged for you. Time is dashing by so quickly now as Thanksgiving approaches, Advent and then Christmas. Let us keep focused and use every opportunity to thank God for all of the blessings He has bestowed upon us this year.

Sister Lucia told us that we are living in the End Time. Satan is doing all he can to hide this truth in order to drive us to despair or lull us to sleep. Better yet, if he can get us to doubt the providence and love of God, he scores a victory! We are at war. The battle in which we are engaged is a spiritual one. The only weapon left to us is prayer! Prayer is stronger than a nuclear bomb.

Never, for any reason, give up your Daily Prayers!

We witness today the dismantling of Christian values; the new morality tells us to be our own guide: if it feels right, do it. Youth have turned to witchcraft, Satan worship and drugs. One poor mother wrote to me that her son had always wanted to be a priest but, now, he is an addict of porno, bad video games and glued to his computer. Children are a burden instead of a blessing. Life as a family no longer exists; birth control and divorce are the norm. The battle at hand is cosmic; it is between Our Blessed Mother and Satan. Be alert for anything that lessens devotion to Mary. Satan fears Her more than Christ Himself. People who have lost their faith are much easier to seduce than those with strong devotion, those who pray! The fabric of society is the family. When the family goes, society can stand no longer. The main target is youth. Cartoons and movies have programmed our youth since they were old enough to sit in front of the TV. They are entertained to death and yet they are bored, and boredom is the basis of every sin and crime. The Church is a divine Institution and the gates of Hell will not prevail against Her. We must trust God unconditionally, obey Him promptly and love Him with all our hearts. Always be ready for death, pray the Rosary, and cease offending God Who is already too much offended.

Have great courage, God is with us!

TO LIVE FOR GOD ALONE!Pauline Jaricot insisted upon simplicity and her spirituality culminated in the true simplicity of a child and full union with God. In all the perfection of His Being and the enormity of His infinite perfections, God is simple. In God, nothing can grow, increase or change. All the perfections of God are actually nothing but one infinite perfection: THE DIVINE SIMPLICITY. To love God and everything about God, to wish all things for God’s Glory, such is genuine Christian simplicity. In human beings, this virtue of simplicity or childhood has been lost through original sin. Instead of innocence, we have inherited from our first parents’ self-love, a love that thinks only of itself. This selfish love turns one’s heart away from God and centers everything upon itself. Pauline recommended to all the simplicity of children to whom the kingdom of God has been promised. It is a way of life that includes one’s whole being: To go straight to God without detour, to walk through life putting one foot in front of the other, tracing the footsteps of Jesus Christ without becoming tired, without stopping and without looking to the right or to the left, behind us or ahead of us; sufferings, tests, temptations, nothing must deter us until we reach our goal.

The simplicity of heart toward God consists in searching for nothing but God, having the desire to please Him in all things, abiding always by His Will like a small child obeys his mother, loves her tenderly and reposes with absolute confidence clothed in her maternal affection. We should imitate children in their simplicity, their innocence and even their indifference to anyone who is not their mother. How loveable they are and how gentle to everyone yet, nonetheless, they never forget their mother!

The object of Pauline in settling in her home at Lorette was to have a house consecrated to Our Lady, which could serve as the Center of the Living Rosary and a refuge for every Catholic charity in distress. Pauline urged her Daughters of Mary to leave outside their own spirit as one discards an old garment, and to become as small children living in confident abandonment to their parents.

She required of them three dispositions:

  • The desire to be united with God alone;
  • The purity of intention that has for its sole aim nothing other than to please God alone;
  • Complete submission to the Will of God.

“Become as a child, born in a new life, laying in the cradle of the adorable Heart of Jesus and full of His Love for you. Sleep softly in your surrender to His good pleasure until the moment when He awakens you.” (L. 4)

The spirituality of the Living Rosary was also born of this great simplicity which leads to spiritual childhood. It is focused entirely upon God, rather than drawing God’s attention to us. It is the restoration of nature to the obedience of Grace. Ah! This is what made Mary, ‘Queen of all the Saints,’ the richness of Her intentions and Her perfect union of heart with Her Divine Son. Since the age of 20, Pauline had consecrated herself to the Virgin Mary, begging Our Lord to envelope her with His Holy Childhood. She longed to imitate the Child-Jesus, and placed her will in the hands of the Mother of God. She wanted us to love Mary as little children love their mother, without art, without pretension and with all simplicity. Is not this the simple and deep love engraved in the heart of every child for his mother? Mary will teach us to live in Jesus. She is the one who will hide us in Christ. She it was who dressed the Word of God in Her own flesh. It is because of Mary that Jesus dwells among us, that our least actions, even the most ordinary, will be penetrated by Christ’s merits and will have infinite value. It is not the deed which is great, but the heart full of great desires for the glory of God, which gives Him pleasure.

There are no small deeds nor great ones, but the great simplicity of heart that searches for God alone, that desires to please only Him, by spirit and by truth in the small and great things, for man of himself is nothing, but he becomes great and worthy of praise when His actions are united with Christ’s actions. The unique glory of man is to live with Christ and in Christ, to live no longer himself, but to make of his life the living Christ. Pauline was always most conscious of the nothingness of a creature in the face of the greatness of God, Who is immutable truth. Before Him, all things are as nothing. GOD IS EVERYTHING! The creature can do nothing on His own but is like a small child.

Pauline knew she was nothing of herself, but an instrument in God’s Hands to accomplish His merciful designs. Pauline rejoiced in her nothingness, in her great misery. Absolute self-sacrifice and devotion to others, founded on total oblivion of self and the deepest humility was her aim for the Daughters of Mary and for herself. In loving, serving, sacrificing and making Jesus Christ loved and served, she found the only genuine happiness man could taste upon this earth.

For centuries, our cherished Catholic faith has been passed from person to person, parent to child, etc. Each of us carries in our heart a special memory of how God first graced us with the knowledge of the faith and how Our Blessed Mother, Saint Philomena, Venerable Pauline Jaricot and other saints changed our lives and brought us closer to Christ.

In our work in the Universal Living Rosary Association, we see first hand how millions of souls are currently living without that knowledge of God and are living outside of His grace. We have been given a beautiful opportunity to carry out Christ’s work and pass on our faith and blessings to others who would otherwise never be introduced to Our Lord, the Savior of all mankind. Just as we pray for the souls in Purgatory who have no one to pray for them, we should also make it a part of our life’s mission to pass on our faith to as many souls as possible who have no one else to pass it on to them, who don’t know Our Lord and His promise of salvation.

LET US EMBRACE THE WILL OF GOD IN ALL THINGS!

In 1855, Pauline-Marie Jaricot was plunged deep into her well, enclosed inextricably in a labyrinth of contradictions. In the midst of this great suffering, she prayed; “I adore Thee, Will of my beloved Spouse, Will of my Lord, Will of my Savior! I surrender myself to Thee! I thank Thee! I place myself at Thy side! I renounce myself by preference! I love what pleases Thee! Thou art my wealth, even in this life, because true wealth is to reach divine union! In thunderstorms, hailstones, thunders, I will bless the Lord!” (L 61)

In the very core of Pauline’s distress, she always managed to sing God’s praises. What else is sanctity but a perfect conformity to God’s Holy Will! In Heaven, we will see that what caused us pain here upon earth was nothing other than proofs of God’s Mercy.

Pauline had fought from her youth, and still fought to the last hours of her life not only against the rage of the devil and the malice of men, but especially a continual war against her own impetuous nature. She had asked to be immolated for the salvation of souls and so she would not find any scandal in this heavy crucible placed upon her shoulders. It is imperative to see all things as God’s Holy Will and, in this way, one is not exposed to that which weakens charity. Love is preserved amidst all suffering. Her only fear was the loss of God’s Love and His Mercy. If we love the Will of God, it will be our sole treasure and our most tender reward. Patience in all things! Bless the Lord! When our will is fully submissive to the action of God, He is free to hide under the cloud of the action of His creatures. The less we know, the less ‘WE’ act, and all the more God can powerfully perform His work in us.

We must place our absolute confidence in the One Who is our Creator and Savior. We do not choose, He chooses for us that which is for His greater glory and our best good. There is only one good, one truth, one desire by which we reach the beatitude of the Saints in Heaven: God’s Holy Will always and forever! It is demanded of us by Our Lord Jesus Christ in the OUR FATHER. The submission of our intelligence and our will is the true death we must undergo. This is the martyrdom that Pauline daily carried in her body and soul. If she could do nothing else, she could for love of souls shed the blood of her heart. How many tears she shed of which God was the only witness and which He alone would reward!

We realize that her heroic faith, love, energy of soul and the long martyrdom she suffered enabled Pauline to become one with her crucified Savior, Our Eucharistic King. Through this fusion of her being with Christ through suffering, they became as one. Cardinal Villecourt testified: The position of this true maiden of the Church is a problem that no one can solve. There is something so extraordinary in everything related to it, that it is difficult to believe the events come from anywhere but God, in order to purify the victim soul of Pauline. Her oppressors condemned her to a long and agonizing death; her crown of glory will be no different than the palm of the martyrs. Just before the death of Pauline, the holy Cure of Ars proclaimed from his pulpit “I know someone who carries many heavy crosses and who carries them with great love. It is Pauline-Marie Jaricot. If you run from the cross, you will be crushed. If you embrace the cross with love, you will obtain victory.” Pauline not only accepted her cross but also carried it valiantly to the end of her life. When asked how she could bear this suffering, she drew out her Crucifix and replied, “I have looked at Him, I have loved Him, and I have understood; this is why I forgive all.”

Pauline loved to sign herself ‘the poor one of Mary,’ for the poor have only God for support and only God as their strength and help, but God alone is sufficient!

Dearest Patti:My wife, Mary, and I are most blessed by and thankful for your ministry, wonderfully manifest in the most generous gift of lovely and inspirational Universal Living Rosary Association of Saint Philomena (ULRA) materials we are sharing with friends in our community as well as in Canada. We are indeed blessed to be united with you and all of our brothers and sisters in Christ and His Mother in the ‘great family’ that is the Universal Living Rosary Association.

Frequently homebound by increasingly debilitating health issues throughout the year 2013, I have sensed the grace of the “temple” of my body being “torn down” in order to allow the Holy Spirit to direct Mary and I as how best to spread the message of God’s love and mercy in our community.

That Blessed Spirit moves in mysterious ways and, quite unexpectedly, situations arose and people in our community and from the seven prayer apostolates in the US, Canada and Italy in which we are members (including you!) presented themselves as opportunities and guides in the past week for discernment and direction. Our longtime and ever increasing devotion to the Divine Mercy, Holy Rosary and intercession of St. Joseph (as patron of workers), St. Philomena (as patroness of youth), Blessed Luigi and Maria Quattrocchi (as patrons of spouses, families and the pro-life movement), Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati (as patron for youth of our time) and Blessed Maria Teresia Ledochowska (as patroness of abolition of slavery in all its forms) has blossomed beyond our expectations.

We, with the approval of our pastor, have embarked on a program of prayerful gatherings and presentations to our area youth and couples as well as publications in the regional media in which we share our love for Our Dear and Merciful Lord and celebrate the examples of His Holy Mother and the Saints and Blesseds of our time.

And, today, as I had the grace to help coordinate for the second year our local “America Needs Fatima” Rosary in our parish church of St. Mary (founded in 1823 by Father Antoine Blanc of Lyon, France, with support from Venerable Pauline-Marie Jaricot!), we were blessed to be in company of more than 100 brothers and sisters in Christ and His Mother, a five-fold increase over last year’s participation, and all were provided the opportunity to enroll in the Universal Living Rosary Association, thanks to the materials you so graciously sent us.

Please know that, though we may be separated in physical proximity from you and other members of the ULRA family, you are always in our hearts and we offer you our deepest gratitude, love, many daily prayers and best wishes in all that you do in and for Our Lord. May our Kind and Gracious Lord bless you and your loved ones, all ways and in all ways!

My husband had been suffering from intense left flank pain for a week. Since Mr. Ed Sindiong gave me some Saint Philomena oil, I applied it on the area and the pain subsided for a few days. Then, one day, the pain recurred. We decided to see a doctor specialist in Dumaguete City. The diagnosis was an obstruction of a kidney stone in his right proximal urethra and his creatinine measured nine. The recommendation was to undergo shockwave to pulverize the stone. On August 25, 2013, we decided to go to Cebu City supposedly for the shockwave procedure. Tests were conducted the following day. The next day, the results came out and my husband was admitted in the hospital to monitor his creatinine, which read nine. Shockwave was ruled out because this will cause internal bleeding when the creatinine is above five. An operation to insert a stint into the urethra to remove the stone and ease the passage of urine was prescribed instead of it. First, a dialysis had to be conducted to manage his creatinine.

The first of four sessions of dialysis was conducted on August 28. We prayed the Rosary all throughout the 4-hour procedure. All through this time, the pain was still intense. Although a pain reliever was given every 8 hours, it only last for six. It was the St. Philomena oil and the praying of the Rosary which took care of the remaining 2 hours and which also put him back to sleep at night when he was awaken by severe pain.

After a week and four dialysis procedures, we decided to go back to Dumaguete because his creatinine was still high at 9.6. Stint insertion could not be done at this level. We were referred to another specialist in Dumaguete to handle his case. The IJ catheter attached to his shoulder for the dialysis procedure was not removed yet in case he needed another dialysis.

The creatinine read 11.1 this time. The doctor said we needed to proceed with the stint operation to remove the stone and allow urine to pass smoothly. Based on the creatinine result, his left kidney was no longer functioning. We needed to take the risk despite the high creatinine level to save the right kidney. It takes only 8 weeks to lose it and we were now on the 3rd week.

In the afternoon of September 16, my husband again underwent a creatinine test. That night, my husband and I prayed the Rosary together and asked for the intercession of St. Philomena as usual. Then, I applied Holy Water on the pain area and did casting out of evil spirits. After that, we applied the St. Philomena oil. On our way to the hospital to get the result of the creatinine test the previous day, the kidney stone passed out.

It was at this point where we revealed to the doctor the happy news that the kidney stone had come out! He was so surprised because he said he had not done anything. He said he still had to have the stone examined. It was 1.1 cm in size. But he did not discount the power of prayer and the works of God.

In our ardent desire to get the stone out, my husband also resorted to alternative medicine from naturopathy doctor. He acknowledged that it takes around three months to expel a stone and creatinine level could not be lowered this fast.

On September 20, my husband’s creatinine registered 1.8 and 1.9 on September 24. The doctor this time personally removed the tubes intended for dialysis procedure, a remnant of my husband’s hospitalization in Cebu almost a month ago.

By October 8, another creatinine test will be done. Nevertheless, one thing is sure for my husband and me, he has been cured and we have the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Philomena to thank a million times over for their intercession to God, our Healer. To Him be all the glory!

GREAT WORKS OF GOD ARE BORN ONLY ON CALVARY

“MY ONLY TREASURE IS THE CROSS”

Since the time of her adolescence, Pauline Jaricot perceived the distress of the working class. While industry flourished, the workers lived in misery. The situation was especially tragic in Lyon. The people in the silk factory worked 17 hours a day for a minimal salary. Their lodgings were poor. The result was the de-Christianization of the working classes. Pauline sensed this economic revolution would give birth to socialism. She begged God to help her find a remedy for the discouragement, immorality and despair which took hold of the masses. What must be returned to man first was his dignity as a child of God, and the dignity of his position as the head of his family so that he might taste the sweetness of family life, the consolations and hopes of religion, and pull himself up from this slavery of work without rest. Her vision was one in which the husband was returned to the wife, the mother to her children, the father to the child and God to the man, whose happiness and end He is.

Pauline was convinced that the workers would regenerate themselves if only there could be found apostles within their midst. She longed to form a Catholic settlement in which the workers would be paid a just wage that would allow them to care with dignity for the needs of their family, and have time for prayer and devotions in order to preserve their faith. The success of those living in this settlement would be the work of the infinite mercy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

To this end, Pauline invested all her capital and formed a core group of wealthy people each of whom would invest 400 pounds. She called this plan “The Bank of Heaven!” These loans repayable in small amounts each year would form an investment to help Catholic charities. A factory with surrounding property was purchased. The enterprise was viable. Pauline put her faith in two swindlers of high society who veiled themselves in piety that they might win her confidence. Pauline was crushed by their infamous betrayal; all that was invested was lost. Pauline was alone, ruined and crushed by the huge debt she owed. She felt a keen responsibility to those who had invested in the Bank of Heaven.

Cardinal Villecourt suggested that she might travel throughout France and try to collect money from the souls whom she had helped and who knew her character. At first, many stepped forward to help Pauline recover her losses. But, at this time, a process began which was to undermine her efforts and destroy her reputation. This marked the beginning of a lifetime of martyrdom for Pauline. Her properties, one by one, were stripped from her. All that remained was Lorette, where she now lived in misery, cold, sickness and starvation. The calumny began in whispers that Pauline was hiding her money, and that she was hoarding the money that was donated to her, enriching herself. Those jealous of her, now began to intervene to stop all her collection of money from any source whatsoever. They denied her title as foundress of the Propagation of the Faith and persuaded even her Living Rosary not to assist her with any funds. Exposed to general humiliations, slander, injustice and complete abandonment, she persevered. God alone knew her sorrows. Pauline was heroically silent in this great trial and her request until her death was that no one let anything be made known about her misfortunes which might cast any blame on her neighbors.

As if this was not enough, the worst happened. The honorable men of Lyon who constituted the Commission of Fourviere, coveted her property of Lorette to integrate their plan to develop a chapel. They made every effort to force her to sell it at a great loss. Pauline refused. This sale would be a huge loss for the poor workers. She fought for ten years to defend her property and the poor. She was ridiculed as “being proud and obstinate.” In all this suffering, Pauline realized that it was her good intentions which made her pleasing to God, and that the crosses which befell her weakness were those chosen by God to sanctify the works which she had the honor to be entrusted with. In all these sufferings, Pauline grew spiritually. Still, she was deeply human and acknowledged fear of this great cross but, with absolute abandonment, she accepted the crucible offered to her by God’s Love, in union with His Passion for the salvation of souls. Pauline valiantly carried this cross until her death.

The heavens seemed deaf to her cries and she was stripped of spiritual consolations. She united her own tribulation to that of the Church and France where impiety ruled and de-Christianization reigned. This thought was a vice, which strangled her heart. ‘LET US PRAY!’ Pauline remained immersed in the fire of this bitter fight and her soul deepened in the wisdom of the Cross. It is through suffering alone that love is tested. Through this test, God is glorified. On Calvary, souls are perfected in love. No greater gift does God have to give to His friends, than the treasure of the Cross. The Saints in Heaven know the value of the cross but we, ignorants on earth, must learn its value. If the souls tested by tribulation knew the gift of God, they would praise Him unceasingly. The Cross is my only Treasure! Pauline died in total destitution, embracing the Cross to her last breath.

This is the box we send out to the foreign Missions $77.95. It contains Rosaries, Scapulars, Miraculous Medals, Cord & Oil, Newsletters, Calendars, Catechism books, 2 TAN books, large color prints, lists and encouragements for our Promoters.

Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary

Dear Apostle of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Your loving gift brings hope and joy to despairing hearts! Life for many is filled with great trials and much suffering. Anxious and desperate, they feel very discouraged. Browsing through the Encyclicals written by Pope Leo XIII, the feeling of desperation is overcome and we are filled with a positive plan of action which will obtain for us strength and victory. Hope is soon planted firmly in our souls, not to be uprooted!

Amidst the worst kind of anarchy, corruption and utter ruin, the Church has always found victory, not with troops or arms, but with the power of the Most Holy Rosary. We, too, may rejoice in this knowledge if we ardently and perseveringly pray the Rosary. When we have recourse to the Mother of Mercy, She is instantly at our side of Her own accord dispensing plentiful Graces from that treasure with which, from the beginning, She was divinely endowed in the fullest abundance that She might be found worthy to be the Mother of God. It is a great thing for any Saint to have Grace sufficient for the salvation of many souls; but to have enough to suffice for the salvation of everybody in the whole world, this is the greatest of all. It is impossible to say how pleasing and gratifying it is to Mary when we greet Her with the Angelic Salutation, Full of Grace! The Rosary contains the chief Mysteries of the Christian religion in an orderly fashion and impresses them upon our mind. In the places, the families and the Nations in which the Rosary of Mary retains its ancient honor, the loss of faith through ignorance and vicious error need not be feared. With suppliant hands held out to Mary, let us lift up our voices in prayer:

Keep our lives spotless, make our ways secure;
Till we find in Jesus, joys that will endure!

THE LIVING ROSARY – THE CROWN OF ROSES

After having left the direction of the Propagation of the Faith “to those who wished to take it,” Pauline retired to pray and meditate. In 1826, Pauline founded her second great work, the work of her heart: The prestigious Living Rosary! The Propagation of the Faith and the Living Rosary were the two greatest works of the Church in the 19th Century. They will mark the history of the Church after the French Revolution. The Living Rosary experienced immense success in every class of society. Henceforth, until her death, Pauline’s life was dominated by the Living Rosary. For a period of 30 years, this simple yet hugely fertile association is her uncontested domain and personal success. (Fr. G. Naidenoff) She managed this universal work alone. Lorette, her home, was the Center. She had two chaplains and a few companions, the Daughters of Mary who, with her, led a religious life.

Pauline had always been haunted with the desire of making Jesus Christ known and loved. In her day, souls had grown cold and the faith itself was threatened. It was vital to awaken in society supernatural values. How could this be done? Pauline had recourse to Mary. Many times, the Church had recommended the Holy Rosary to revive devotion, appease the wrath of God and produce the fruit of virtue in souls. But the devotion had fallen by the wayside, being left to the devout, the old or the unlettered. Many considered it a prattle of superstition. Pauline knew personally of the power of the Rosary. It was a summary of the Gospel, a history of the Life of Christ and Mary, a book opened to all, the fruit of which was plentiful tenderness of His Love and consolation abundant. She pondered how it would be possible to make this prayer agreeable for the masses. Under the inspiration of Heaven, Pauline adopted the means, which had proved so successful with the Propagation of the Faith: PRAYER, PENNY and PROPAGATION! She launched the groups of “fifteens”. Every person committed to praying one decade of the Rosary daily, meditating on a given mystery for the period of one month. She linked the spiritual inspiration to a practical organization! 15 hearts united, forming 150 roses as a crown for Jesus through Mary. Spiritually, they were all linked through intention and through their prayer of the Rosary. This Association was a union of hearts, a universal spiritual family. Each member was linked invisibly but, united, they prayed the whole Rosary, and all of them gained the merits of each rose. Pauline likened the 15 to coals ~ some were cold, some poorly lit and a few would be on fire. Bring them together and you have an inferno! She asked each member to bring in five other members. The 15’s then increased with an unbelievable speed. By the year of her death in 1862, the Living Rosary numbered over 2,250,000 in France alone.

Through the Living Rosary, Pauline wanted to animate persons in a great movement of prayer. Individually, her desire was to enliven Christians. Bad books abounded which poisoned souls and plunged the faithful into lukewarmness. These five minutes of meditation daily on the mysteries of the Life of Christ could not help but warm up and vivify the hearts of men, thus producing the fruit of salvation. On an ecclesiastical level, she challenged her associates by proposing this great universal and missionary effort for the intentions of the conversion of sinners, and the preservation of the faith in France and all Catholic countries, as well as the propagation of the faith in the whole world, and the exaltation of Holy Mother the Church. Here, we have it, the enormous goal of the Living Rosary in the world. The Holy Rosary is put forth as the combat weapon par excellence! Praying the Rosary we offer to the Father the infinite merits of Jesus and Mary, we recognize the love of Christ’s Heart for mankind as the principle object of our praises. (CRY 1850)

THE LIVING ROSARY UNITES US!

THOUGH WE ARE MANY, WE BECOME ONE!

The work of the Living Rosary made Pauline famous. She was its mother and its queen. She exercised an influence without measure. Through her letters, her circulars and personal interviews, she communicated the super-abundance of her spiritual life. She transmitted the fire which consumed her to others. Her influence was immense. The Living Rosary was ablaze! This magnificent work of the “Daily Decade” triggered a true spiritual renewal of society in the 19th Century. The Living Rosary was the very first organization of the Church in France and the countries of Switzerland, Belgium and America, after the devastation of the French Revolution. Repeatedly, it was approved and blessed by Holy Mother the Church. In 1827, it was officially blessed by the Nuncio in France, Cardinal Lambruschini, who became its protector. Pope Gregory XVI in two formal briefs gave the Living Rosary his approval ~ January 27 and February 2, 1832.
