Dearest Patti:

Ave Maria!

Below are the pictures taken at the Saint Philomena Chapel at Barangay Santa Rosa in Tabango, Leyte during ULRA promotion and orientation. This Chapel is under the Holy Child Parish in the Diocese of Naval, the place of Bishop Filomeno Bactol, our Spiritual Director. We started to build up missionary promoters here for the entire diocese. Bishop Bactol is constantly guiding us in our apostolic work and we closely work with the Parish Pastors in their respective parishes.

Dear Patti Melvin,

May the Peace and Love of Jesus Christ and Blessed Mother Mary be with you today and for all Eternity! Amen.

I thank you immensely for your letter dated April 13, 2015. I received the Rosaries with full of joy and I have given it to the orphans at the Orphanage of the Holy Spirit Egoro Amede, Ekpoma, Edo State when I was on my Pastoral visit. How is your apostolate doing? Please pray for me and my dad, Richard Oguguo Uwagbaokwu, who is sick. I am very happy to write to you. Keep up the good work! Through the religious articles you send to me including the literature, I am learning new things every day and deepening my spiritual life through those spiritual materials. I have started the Congregation of the Children of Mary and we need the Manual of the Children of Mary and other relevant literature. We also need some books of sound Catholic Teachings, a big statue of Our Lady and Saint Philomena which we will be using in our Meetings, and a good flower from your center and crucifix. The one we have been using here belongs to the Church.

I am always happy to read all the literature you send to me. Frankly speaking, you have updated me on sound Catholic Faith. Thank you for your kind generosity and love for Mary. May the Immaculate Heart of Mary be praised both now and forever!

I am sending an article I have written on The Centrality Of Mary’s Genealogy In The Salvic Mission. You are can published it to your magazine.

I am working with the orphans and the poor suffering people of God. Please pray for me daily. Please pray for vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life. We have young men who are here and have indicated their interest to become priests but no one to sponsor them through the seminarian formation. Attached are the photos of those who received their First Holy Communion, Baptism and Confirmation during the Easter period.

Thank you and remain blessed! Caritas Christi Urget Nos! Yours in Christ and Mary,

Rev. Uwagbaokwu Chukwudi O. Joachim – Missionaries of the Poor

ST. PHILOMENA, GOD’S GIFT TO THE MODERN WORLD (Continued)

This is a great marvel. The lily is Saint Philomena. Still young, she knew and appreciated virginity at its true worth. Next to her heavenly treasure of purity, the Emperor’s hand, the throne’s majesty and the honors attached to high rank, all goods and glory of this world meant nothing.

Let the World See Saint Philomena and Blush!

At a tender age, Philomena vowed her perpetual virginity to her Spouse. The most cruel death did not dissuade her. She received the crown and halo. Now, she is to rest for a while; for soon the day will come when her dormancy will cease. Mother without ceasing to be virgin, she will spiritually beget with Jesus Christ a family of virgins made in her model. After a century of mud and putrefaction, it is for you that God in His Infinite Mercy has destined this grace. The worldly know the narrow obligations the law of God imposes upon them and they flee. They persuade themselves that, surrounded by temptation and weakness of flesh, these laws of purity are made only for Religious or those in cloisters. Hence, they abandon themselves to liberty, or rather the license of excess, and dare to cross the limits of modesty and decency. Providence uses the perfect purity of a virgin to confound and condemn this notion, and places her upon the holy altars.

You may feel that her position, life circumstances and age never put her in contact with the dangers which surround us. On the contrary, never did we see a lily surrounded by more thorns; never was seduction more capable of weakening a young heart, more powerful on the imagination, more able to attain its goal, than what was proposed to this virgin. She knew no cloister other than her father’s palace. The period in which she lived was pagan and moral standards corrupt. To see a world ruler humiliate himself at her feet and present her with the most flattering propositions, but also to be threatened with the rigors of the most dreadful torments, to hear the sobs of her father, the piercing cries of her mother… this was a reality for Philomena: to be separated from everything which she held most dear and faced with the frightening prospect of a grievous future.

These are not little showers or waves which come to fall on the security of her virginity; they are rivers over-flowing and roaring. The very ocean hurls itself against her. The struggle is short. The greater the peril, the more the Power of God will manifest itself. Virginity has triumphed and the unruly floods which rolled against her with so much violence have been turned back against themselves. Such is the victory of faith.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL

Mary, Queen and Mother of Carmel, I come today to consecrate myself entirely to Thee. To Thee as the Mother of Grace, I owe all that I am and all that I have, and my whole life is a small return for the many graces and blessings that have come from God to me through thy hands. Since thou regardest with an eye of special kindness those who wear thy Scapular, I implore thee to strengthen my weakness with thy power, to enlighten my mind with thy wisdom, to increase in me Faith, Hope and Charity that I may render, day by day, my debt of humble homage to thee.

May thy Scapular keep thine eyes of mercy turned towards me and bring me thy special protection in the daily struggle to be faithful to thy Divine Son and to thee.

May it separate me from all that is sinful in life and remind me constantly of my duty to behold thee and to clothe me with thy virtues. From henceforth, I shall strive to live in the sweet companionship of thy spirit, to offer all to Jesus through thee and to make my life the mirror of thy humility, charity, patience, meekness and prayerfulness.

O dearest Mother, support me by thy never failing love that I, an unworthy sinner, may come one day to exchange thy Scapular for the wedding garment of Heaven and dwell with thee and the Saints of Carmel in the Kingdom of thy Son. Amen.

O, Beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Pray for Us!

THE GREATEST PRIVILEGE IS REAL AND IT IS OURS!

Heaven and Hell are locked in mortal combat and earth shakes from the shock of the encounter; but no one feels it, no one sees it, no one hears it, no one cares! The salvation of my soul is the most imperative and urgent objective of my life on earth. It is the greatest and grandest occupation in which I can engage. In fact, I am here for no other purpose.

The Brown Scapular is a Sacramental of the Church; it is a Gift from Heaven and a symbol of salvation. A True Child of Mary is NEVER LOST! Those who are clothed in the Scapular are under the protection and sanctifying mantle of the Mother of God. It is a safeguard in danger, whether physical or moral; it invites its wearer to penance and purity, and shields him from Satan and sin!!! The Brown Scapular marks the militia of the Immaculate One. Mary’s livery is the Brown Scapular. To serve Mary is the highest privilege and pledge of eternal salvation. The Brown Scapular, the Garment of Mary Immaculate, is a constant call to modesty in dress and conduct, a silent protest against present-day permissiveness and a hidden appeal to reparation for the insolent nakedness of proud Neo-Paganism! The Brown Scapular is like a hair-shirt, a mild reminder of the need of constant mortification. We are all but infants in virtue and helpless as babes in the woods of this bleak world. We stand in dire need of Our Mother’s unconditional love and care. Our utter helplessness and misery is our claim to her undying protection. The Brown Scapular is a mirror of humility and chastity: the epitome of modesty and simplicity, an eloquent symbol of unceasing prayer, a Total Consecration to the Mother of God. We cannot unite with others in this battle for the Triumph of Christ the King at the cost of TRUTH! What is needed is a unity of prayer! To a faithless world, Our Blessed Mother comes offering us a choice: Death in Life or Life after Death!

“The ultimate Goal of the Requests of Our Lady of Fatima is the Triumph of her Immaculate Heart! It is thought by experts who were convoked by the Bishop of Fatima that the Conversion of Russia would not only be a Sign of that Triumph, but that much of the leadership and drive of the spiritual renewal which will characterize this Triumph will come from Russia!”

There is a great deal of urgency as well as finality to the Fatima Message: Men must cease offending God, Who is already too much offended! Thus, the formula for the Triumph is centered around the offering up of the sacrifices demanded by our state in life and deepening our devotion to Mary by Consecration, the Rosary and the Scapular. Each of these parts is closely related; like the four legs of a chair, all four are needed. It is useless to ask which one is more important than the other. All four make up the solid basis for the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the individual and for all the world. The sign of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Scapular, is silent! And, yet, the Scapular has been the vehicle of more numerous miracles and favors than any other sign the world has ever known. We must strive for the virtues which this Holy Habit signifies: simplicity, humility, faith, trust, love of God and union with Him. We should kiss the Scapular often. Pope Benedict XV granted 500 days indulgence each time we kiss our Scapular. The Sabbatine Privilege was first promulgated by Pope John XXII and was subsequently promulgated by nine other Popes.

What is the remedy needed today? How beautiful that we do know this with absolute clarity, for this remedy has been given to us by God Himself: BEHOLD THY MOTHER! It is His last will and testament to us. IT IS FOR TODAY! We must have an immense increase of devotion to God’s Holy Mother. Mary Immaculate is the Mediatrix and Co-Redemptrix of the human race and God’s Peace resides within her Immaculate Heart! We seek in vain for it elsewhere. “Devotion to Mary must be the prominent characteristic of our religion. Jesus is obscured because Mary is kept in the background. Thousands of souls perish because Mary is withheld from them. It is the miserable, unworthy shadow which we call our devotion to the Blessed Virgin that is the cause of all our wants and blights. It is at the root of our decline! If Mary were but known how much happier, how much holier, how much less worldly we would be and how much more we would be living images of Our Lord and Savior, her dearest and most Blessed Son!” (Father F.W. Faber – November 21, 1862)

Each of us must be aglow within, shining without, ardent for love of God and our fellow man; ardent in prayer, brilliant in action; ardent for the Glory of God and luminous with charity for our neighbor. But, where are we to light our torch and obtain the fire which must enkindle the hearts of men? It must be in the furnace of the Holy Heart of the Mother of Fair Love! Her Heart will inflame the hearts of the just and, at the same time, set fire to the hearts of sinners!

Don’t hold back! The Church is the Family of God. It is a Universal Church. There is no such thing as a spiritual step-
child. Be an intimate part of the Family! Don’t be afraid to turn to Mary, your Mother. Abundant are the graces and powerful the blessings which come to us through her Immaculate Heart. Open your arms and your heart, and receive them all. Sign up for the Scapular Confraternity, it is part of your Family inheritance!

With all our hearts, we praise thee, O Mother of God!
Hail Mary, Daughter of God the Father!
Hail Mary, Mother of God the Son!
Hail Mary, Spouse of the Holy Ghost!
Hail Mary, Temple of the Divinity!
Hail Mary, Immaculate Lily of the resplendent Trinity!
Hail Mary, Queen of the Universe, to whom all power has been given in Heaven and on Earth!
Hail Mary, Queen of my heart, my Mother, my Life, my Consolation and my Hope!

HAIL HOLY QUEEN, MOTHER OF MERCY, OUR LIFE, OUR SWEETNESS AND OUR HOPE!

Write to us TODAY and include a donation to help cover the cost of the Scapular materials, your Membership and the monthly Masses.

We offer this Sacred Bouquet of Holy Masses during the month of July, in honor of and in thanksgiving for the great privilege of the Protection of the Mother of God, given to us by God, through her most Holy Scapular: In reparation for our sins and the sins of the whole world, in petition for all the graces necessary for salvation for ourselves and our families, and in thanksgiving for God’s Holy Mother and all the abundant blessings and gifts we have received through her Pure and Immaculate Heart and Hands!

In honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, let us recommend our loved ones, living and departed, to the maternal Heart of Mary, through the Holy Scapular and enroll them in the special thirty one days of Holy Masses being offered in July through Father Ivan Kolodiy in Ukraine, for our families. May they be surrounded by the protection of the Mother of God through the Holy Scapular!

Share Your Gift of Faith

For centuries, our cherished Catholic faith has been passed from person to person, parent to child, etc. Each of us carries in our heart a special memory of how God first graced us with the knowledge of the faith and how Our Blessed Mother, Saint Philomena, Venerable Pauline Jaricot and other saints changed our lives and brought us closer to Christ.

In our work in the Universal Living Rosary Association, we see first hand how millions of souls are currently living without that knowledge of God and are living outside of His grace. We have been given a beautiful opportunity to carry out Christ's work and pass on our faith and blessings to others who would otherwise never be introduced to Our Lord, the Savior of all mankind. Just as we pray for the souls in Purgatory who have no one to pray for them, we should also make it a part of our life's mission to pass on our faith to as many souls as possible who have no one else to pass it on to them, who don't know Our Lord and His promise of salvation.

This is the box we send out to the foreign Missions $77.95. It contains Rosaries, Scapulars, Miraculous Medals, Cord & Oil, Newsletters, Calendars, Catechism books, 2 TAN books, large color prints, lists and encouragements for our Promoters.

The Heart of the Little Flower
(by Fr. Joseph Jusslein, SJ – 1924)

“It is now the hour to rise from sleep.” (Rom. 13)

The Fire of the Holy Ghost does not animate our everyday life with Divine Love as it did the early Christians. One can easily see how the enemies of the Church, filled with satanic hatred, are bent upon leading away from Christ the souls, which He has so dearly bought with His own Precious Blood. Amidst the spreading poison of worldliness, souls become pleasure-mad and are drawn down to perdition. A well-trained army of souls is needed to stand by faithful priests and help save souls. We must make haste to do now what will profit us for all eternity. Advance and run the way of God's Commandments with expanded hearts and with unspeakable sweetness of true charity: Let us never depart from His Divine guidance that we may persevere in His doctrine till death. May we, by our patient share in the sufferings of Christ, be found worthy to be …

Co-Heirs of His Kingdom!

Humility secures God's Grace. The first degree of humility is obedience without any delay. We must remain in constant readiness always to obey quickly and cheerfully the Will of God. It is the path to Heaven that will never lead us astray. Our cheerful obedience to lawful authority – be it parent, superior or teacher from a supernatural motive, is truly an apostolic act.

The heart of Saint Therese understood and embraced this sublime way of life completely. It was her goal in life to love Jesus as He had never yet been loved. She could not love Him with as great a love as Mary's but she might love Him with a love distinctive of herself, a love that would charm His Heart. To the Mother love of Mary, she could add the sweet child love of her heart. The fragrance of the perfume of her Little Way now fills the wide spaces of the Church Militant on earth, brings comfort and relief to the Suffering Souls in Purgatory, and is forever giving joy to the Church Triumphant in Heaven.

The secret of the Little Flower can be briefly told. It is not a complicated formula of piety. The Master Himself taught her, and so her way is simplicity and truth itself. To understand it more perfectly, one must be humble. To be transformed into humility, one must have the trust of a child and love with the heart of a child. There is nothing more effective than suffering to teach us that of ourselves we can do nothing. Being incapable of anything, we must with total trust rest in the Arms of God’s paternal Providence. It is the precious gift of suffering borne for the love of Christ and in obedience to His Divine Will that opens the door of our hearts to the secret of Saint Therese.

"It is the Way of Spiritual Childhood …
The Way of Trust and Absolute Self-Surrender!"

There is to be nothing extraordinary in her Little Way. Never did she rest in her ambition to win souls for Jesus. No matter how weak, she always LOVED. Her Divine Spouse is longing above all for the souls of priests.

“There is but one thing to be done here below: to love Jesus and to save souls so that He may be all the more loved. We must not let slip even the smallest opportunity of giving Him joy!"

This is the essence of the life of Saint Therese. It is her mission on earth and the one she will fulfill throughout eternity until the last day. Love lives only by sacrifice, thus the more we surrender ourselves to love, the more we must surrender ourselves to suffering. If we could only say with Saint Therese, “I love Jesus so very much that I am always content with what He sends me." What happiness we might possess if we could forget ourselves and think only of others. Even when Therese had nothing, she gave Jesus this nothing. In imitation of Saint Therese, let us …

NOT SEEK JOY but SEEK to GIVE JOY!

The heart of St. Therese was bright and cheerful, boundlessly confident, astonishingly daring; hesitated at nothing, feared no sacrifice, dreaded no suffering and thought of no reward. It was the breath of God that inflamed within her heart a consuming desire to die, at last, a Victim of Love for Him.

“In order that my life be one Act of perfect love, I offer myself as a victim of Holocaust to Thy Merciful Love, imploring Thee to consume me unceasingly and to allow the floods of the infinite tenderness gathered up in Thee to overflow into my soul, so that I may become a very martyr of Thy Love, O my God."

“To live of Love,
’Tis not to pitch our tent
On Tabor's height, and
There with Thee remain,
'Tis to climb Calvary,
With strength nigh spent,
And count Thy heavy Cross Our Truest Gain!

It was to Mary, indeed, that Therese had the most tender recourse and, by Mary, she found her way to the Heart of God.

A deep humility was the foundation of Saint Therese's love and it was her very littleness that made God Himself stoop down and take her up in His Arms. Above all, let us be little. “I shall come down and spend my Heaven doing good upon earth. On the battlefield in defense of the Church, I would be a missionary, were it possible, from the beginning of the world till the consummation of time.” It is love that gives life to the Mystical Body of Christ. Were this love to be extinguished, the Apostles would no longer preach the Gospel and the Martyrs would refuse to shed their blood. St. Therese understood that love embraces all vocations and that it reaches through all ages and to the utmost limits of earth because it is eternal. Her heart was aflame with zeal for souls. She longed not just to love, but to make Jesus loved…

Let us with Saint Theresa make our oblation:

In the Heart of my Mother the Church, I will be Love!

COME, HOLY GHOST!

Dear Apostles of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Thank you for your wonderfully generous donation which enables us to reach countless souls with the Sacramentals of Our Blessed Mother and the timeless Truths of the Catholic Faith. God’s Mother is our Mother! What a world of meaning are in these words! What consolation and hope! Why should we ever have any fear or uncertainty, knowing that we have such a powerful, kind and loving Mother watching over us at all times? We have only to ask for her help.

We have enrolled you in a Novena of Sacred Masses being offered in the Holy Land this month. May God reward you eternally!

The Heart of Jesus is that of the Good Shepherd, Who having one hundred sheep and losing one, leaves the ninety nine to search for the one who is lost. Though He is God, He left His Home in Heaven where He was perfectly happy and came to earth to lead a life of suffering in order to save man from the eternal misery which awaited him.

Christ traveled through towns and villages, teaching in the synagogues, freely healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, and raising the very dead to life. He took upon Himself the sins of mankind and the punishment we merited. The angels beheld the spectacle of a God scourged, crowned with thorns, carrying a heavy cross and put to death. All this for a sinful, ungrateful mankind! The sacrifice God made of His Life imposes demanding obligations on us in our conduct toward our fellow man. The disciples were ignorant in many ways and very imperfect. One betrayed Him with a kiss, another denied Him and all, but John, abandoned Him. Still, He never humiliated them or was impatient with them. His charity could not be shaken. After His Resurrection, He was as loving towards them as if they had never offended Him. He saw each man as loved by the Father, just as he was, in spite of his failings. We cannot look for the ideally perfect man before we offer him our charity. We are asked to love one another, not for the good that we may find in them, but for God’s sake! We are asked to love one another as God has loved us.

May the example of Jesus inspire us to be kind and indulgent to all who come in our path! Everyone is worthy of our love! Let us prove our love for God by sacrificing ourselves for others.

One with you in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

PATTI MELVIN, Director – ULRA

Let us pray for one another.

Dear Pattie,

Greetings from the Catholic Diocese of Gbarnga, Liberia!

Thank you very much for all the gifts you have sent me through Mr. James Doe of Monrovia.

I am a chronic devotee to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Her Holy Rosary.

James and I are discussing how we can help many people in my Diocese and elsewhere to seriously pray the Holy Rosary.

During the Ebola onslaught on Liberia, almost every sector of my diocese prayed the Rosary for 90 consecutive days. Today, Liberia has been declared Ebola free. Glory to God and honor to the Blessed Virgin Mary!

May God bless you all generously as you relentless spread devotion to Our Blessed Mother through the recitation of the Holy Rosary!

Let us keep in touch as much as possible. In Jesus and Mary,

Bishop Anthony Borwah

Bishop says Ebola makes Liberians feel 'God has forsaken us again'

By Bronwen Dachs, Catholic News Service

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (CNS) — A Liberian bishop unable to attend the Synod of Bishops on the family has urged his fellow bishops to use their influence to help West African families in their enormous suffering caused by Ebola.

"It is the poor who have been most harmed" by the Ebola outbreak that, since March, has killed more than 4,500 people, "and it is the poor who are the church's priority," said Bishop Borwah, who was set to represent the Liberian bishops' conference at the synod. With restrictions on travel from Ebola-affected countries, Bishop Borwah was unable to get to Rome.

"We are losing our humanity in the face of Ebola," Bishop Borwah said, noting that "this disease makes impossible ordinary human kindnesses, such as putting your arm around someone who is crying." "Serious effort from church leaders to stand with us in our human misery" would help the people of affected West African countries.

"The influence of the church can cause a lot be done for the sick, who are poor," he said.

"Material help is needed as well as prayers for those who are dying of disease and hunger," he said.

The disease has placed "huge constraints on families," the bishop said, noting that schools have been closed since early August, when a state of emergency was declared.

Markets, where in normal times trading takes place, are largely empty, and many offices have closed, leaving people unable to work, he said.

"To be able to feed one's family is a very basic human need," and most Liberians are no longer able "even to put one meal on the table every day," he said.

Of the countries that pledged money to a trust fund to fight Ebola set up by the United Nations in September, only Colombia has paid, giving $100,000.

As well as being "hungry and angry," Liberians are "fast losing hope," Bishop Borwah said.

Before the Ebola outbreak, the local church was focused on healing the wounds caused by the civil war that ended 10 years ago, leaving Liberia in economic ruin and awash with weapons, he said.

"People are still recovering from many years of war and are very poor. And now, in our new tragic situation, these wounds that were healing have been opened and made more painful," he said.

"During the war, you were still able to bury your dead. With Ebola, you can't even be with your sick; you can't say goodbye to your loved ones," he said.

"The pain people are going through now, when they cannot do this, is beyond words," he said, noting that "we are a broken-hearted people."

Because Ebola is spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, cultural traditions — including washing the bodies of the dead and greeting people affectionately — have been put on hold.

"Funerals, which have the benefit of bringing families together in mourning, no longer take place. This, also, is tearing families apart," Bishop Borwah said.

With Liberia's national Catholic Ebola response team focusing largely on medical help and prevention programs, the Diocese of Gbarnga is working on food distribution. The price of rice and other basic foods has risen sharply as a result of the Ebola outbreak.

Aware of the need to have a holistic approach, the church in Liberia has tasked its justice and peace commission with monitoring violations of human rights "that are particularly prevalent in times of crisis."

"There is a lot of anger" among Liberians, mostly aimed at people in positions of leadership and power, as well as "a feeling that God has forsaken us again."

"The key to survival is to restore our humanity; As a church, we need to look at ways to do this, focusing on long-term solutions," he said.

Dear Mother Patti,

It has been a long time since I communicated with you. I have been unable to e-mail you through the internet café because there was a restriction by the government for us not to make any public gathering. Now, I have returned to the city and I will be finding ways for us to communicate. Even though the Ebola is still in our midst, Brother Peter told me that they have quarantined him in a village all this while. So he has been unable to get access to communicate with you. He asked me to inform you that as soon as the government lifts the quarantine ban on the village, he will communicate with you.

Secondly, all the boxes that you had sent during the Ebola crisis, I did not receive even one. I made a follow up and was told that all the boxes are in France, because there were no flights coming in to bring them. Mrs. Kanu has delivered this letter to your England Center. She is one of your members. We are attending the same church here in Freetown and we are also in the same organization. She was sharing so many items in church regarding the Living Rosary Association. I met her and introduced myself as the coordinator. She was very happy. I decided to give her this letter, some registration forms, photos for delivering to you. Please give her a small box when returning to Freetown because the flight that they are taking will come straight to Freetown. Please send a camera battery for me.

We need your prayers for our country as this deadly Ebola virus has crippled us and killed so many.

Yours sincerely,
JULIANA – SIERRA LEONE

Act of Consecration to

Glory be to Jesus Christ!

Dear Apostles and Benefactors of the Living Rosary,

United as one in the presence of the Mother of God, we prepare for the great Feast of Pentecost. This is the central Feast in which the Holy Ghost comes to plant in our souls the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity to make us believe in God, lead us to all Truth and put us in mind of all that Christ taught us. The Spirit knows all things, even the hidden Mysteries of God. The Holy Spirit in us lifts us out of ourselves; in Him and by Him, we believe in God. Hope and love come to us through Him. It is through Him that God’s Love has been poured into our hearts and souls. The Spirit is the way: the only way to the Heart of Jesus. If we live by the Gift of God, plunged into His Spirit, there will be nothing in us which will escape His influence which is as strong as it is gentle. What strength, security and perfect guidance we find when our lives are filled with the Spirit to whom we surrender! All who were present at Pentecost were filled! The Holy Ghost is not only given to all; He is also given for all. Every Grace given to us is given to all, since it helps to build up the Mystical Body of Christ. If we try to keep it for ourselves, we will lose it! The Holy Ghost desires to be in us as a ray of light for others, a Father of the poor and a Comforter for all who suffer. However slow we are to learn, may He never cease to teach us in what real love consists. True love is always ready to forgive. It shames the strong by showing what the weak can do.

The greatest enemy of love is not hate, but indifference. The fire entrusted to us is not our human love of our fellow man, but God’s great Love for him, manifested by us. We spread it abroad by dying to sin and living ever closer to God. Sin is a triple crime against the divine Majesty: It is disobedience which neither respects His divine Law nor keeps His Commandments, it shows contempt for God and it is inconceivable ingratitude. We must not concern ourselves with our own small personal interests. Let us embrace the Universe! May the Holy Ghost give us a generous heart and fervent soul, and a loving spirit of sacrifice that our prayers, united through the whole world, will embrace His Will, for the redemption of all mankind!

Beloved Family, our motto should be to “Act, Love and Suffer.” A little while longer, and then Eternity! I assure you of my gratitude and daily remembrance at the Sacred Altar, as this is my privilege as a priest of Holy Mother the Church.

I impart to all of you, my priestly blessing:

In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for Us!

Dear Apostle of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

What a special blessing to receive your thoughtful and generous donation for our missionary outreach to the whole world! Your great charity touches the lives of each one of us!

Peace is a personal possession. It is not a virtue, but the effect of virtue and a Fruit of the Holy Spirit. The Heart of Mary at Bethlehem, Nazareth and on Calvary is an ocean of peace. Mary stands as the valiant Woman: adoring, forgiving and suffering with perfect patience and sacrificial silence. Through the Holy Rosary, we seek to fight and defeat the Goliath of Modernism, materialism and hate.

In our daily lives, there is scarcely anything more difficult than the constant practice of gentleness. The virtue of meekness or gentleness is a virtue by which we are in complete control of ourselves: our works, words and desires. Our Blessed Lord was gentleness itself. He asks us be like Him. How very different we are from Him when we lose our temper and give way to the passion or anger!

Christ drew all souls to Himself through His gentleness. We read in the Gospel where He attracted 5000 souls for three days, drawn by the charm of His personality and the solace of His gentle manner. For those who condemned Him to death, He had only the gentleness of silence. For those who crucified Him, He had the gentle words of pardon: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” May the Divine Heart of Jesus, make our hearts like unto His! When the storms are about to break in our lives, may we be comforted by His words: “Peace be to you!” Let us beg from Him, peace of mind, body, and soul.

From the fear of being humbled, O Lord, deliver us!
From the fear of being ridiculed, O Lord, deliver us!

When our self-love is cruelly wounded, do we answer back or do we keep silent? When laughed at and our wisdom is doubted by others, how do we respond? We must imitate our Sweet Savior and realize that the only success we must seek in this life is to be found in doing His Will!

All for Thee, my Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary!

One with you in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

PATTI MELVIN, Director – ULRA

Let us pray for one another.

E-Mail: May 19, 2015

Good Afternoon Madam Patti,

Please be informed that, a few weeks ago, I received the first box you sent me and now I email the lists of new members enrolled in the ULRA from Surigao City, Philippines. It is a very exciting experience that my first request for the supplies through email was granted by your Association. I received a total of 135 Rosaries, Scapulars, Miraculous Medals and St. Philomena cards. My husband and children joined me in enthusiastically distributing the Rosaries and St. Philomena cards to those who willingly accepted the Living Rosary. Thanks be to God that the new members likewise showed their excitement in joining the ULRA! At least through this humble work, we can multiply the numbers of Catholic faithful praying the Holy Rosary daily. We believe that the Holy Rosary is a powerful weapon against all evils in the society.

Likewise, the holy oil of St. Philomena continues to be an effective instrument that brings healing to those who are sick. It is really an amazing experience to ask the intercession of St. Philomena. Miracles and extraordinary events continue to flourish in my life and my family. Despite our economic difficulty because of financial crisis, our beloved St. Philomena continues to intercede for us that money mysteriously came to us to sustain our daily needs. It is unbelievable but it is really happening! Viva Saint Philomena! I hope and pray that people will experience the love of God through the intercession of St. Philomena and God will protect us against all tribulations and calamities.

Lastly, may I humbly request from your benevolent heart to please provide us another FOREX box for us to continue to propagate the Living Rosary to our brethren, especially to the poor souls in our community.

Thank you very much and God bless all of us more abundantly! Ad Jesum Per Mariam!

ST. PHILOMENA, GOD’S GIFT TO THE MODERN WORLD! (Continued)

The anti-Christs will conspire with such malice, audacity and slander against Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Church, not only in the cities amidst their vain, false enlightenments and their vehement disbelieving cries of slander, but even in the hamlets his reign will be marked by the infestation of this disgusting poison and impious vomit. He cries out to them: Listen to reason! Let your conscience be your guide! You do not need the priest; let every man be his own priest. These are the moralities which the body of pestilence sends to the people. It is the accursed weed which the enemy throws by the handful into the fields of Jesus Christ. And, sadly, we see the pitiable results. False prophets spring up with a roar to devour their prey. God’s Laws have fallen to scorn, souls are gorged with gold and silver, sanctuaries are profaned and the Holy Sabbath day provokes disdain. Fathers and mothers are insulted by their children, marriage is weakened by the abominations of adultery; incest has stained all classes, broken all barriers, trampled under foot nature itself and its most inviolate sacred rights.

Such is the fruit of our forgetfulness of God and the scorn with which we reject Him. What sad pangs wound our Mother, the Church! She has felt them in Her heart and to the depths of Her womb. The priesthood is humiliated, God’s way abandoned, the Church’s riches have become the prey of Her persecutors, the brilliance of Her glory is obscured and nearly extinguished. Those who remain faithful are scorned by friends, family and the world. Who will be raised up to console them? Our face is covered with confusion and suffering surrounds us like the waters of a vast sea. The Lord has harkened to His Church. He stands up in the middle of the boat. The winds and the tempest will always increase to serve the singular purpose of enhancing Her glory. Our Lord will never abandon Her. He commands the fury of the tempest. He calls to His aid the dust of a tomb. This dust is sacred but unknown. Dry bones of the dead are attentive to His words. And, in answer to our prayers and tears, He breathes a new Spirit of Life into these remains of death and they are revived. What a consolation! What a triumph for the Church and for Its true children! Yes, impiety lied to us when it said: The Lord sees not. He has abandoned the earth! Heaven replied with a single combatant. One of the stars, already in order, is detached to confound our enemies and console our hearts.

Contemplate the brightness of this light, which faith puts forth for our attention. Pains, persecutions, outrages, piracy and perhaps chains again, and swords eager for blood … what is all this to us if the Lord is for us? We see His Glory coming out of the foundations of the Church. St. Philomena appears to pour out balm on our wounds, soften our troubles and have us taste happiness in the midst of our tears. Her power is exercised with equal mastery over both body and soul. Nature and Grace hasten to obey her. Faith and morals take on a new life around her. God does not change from day to day. His word has a foundation more solid than the firmament itself. The day will come when the persecutors will blush and grow pale with shame. Hence, in the glorious revelation of St. Philomena, all is promise, all is consolation, and all is a mark of victory; a ray of hope comes forth a thousand times sweeter than honey.

The Church will never cease to offer the faithful the fruits of Her children, which grow on Calvary. The Cross is the most precious pledge of our predestination. It is our greatest gift!

How will the Scriptures be fulfilled? Persecution, ridicule and hatred suffered for the love of Jesus Christ and in His imitation: This is the miracle of the blessed in Heaven. The last days will especially abound with this kind of trial because they must reflect the image of the last days of Jesus Christ. Toward the end of time, there will always be an eye watching to protect the persecuted virtuous ones, the disciples of the Lamb sacrificed on the Cross. They will need Faith and Patience: Patience due to the war which Satan will be permitted to wage against all the Saints; Faith, as this will be their only means to victory. How will they persevere in the midst of such a war and not weaken with each new battle? God, in His goodness and mercy, will extend to them extraordinary graces in the days to come.

Some say the Faith is extinguished, and I say it as well, when looking down on many countries and peoples. It must be added that, in some countries, the torch of Faith is just beginning to shine with a lively brilliance. This is the fruit of miracles worked by Jesus Christ in the name of and by the fruits and merits of His Saints.

Divine Wisdom cries out: “HAVE FAITH! It is I who permit the fearful winds and storms. HAVE CONFIDENCE! It is I who permit the tides to rise. I will come at the moment you need Me. If I must move the heavens and the earth to make you triumph over your enemies, I will do it!”

How this hope consoles us! This lively confidence will allow us to walk without fear in the midst of assaults. If it is a question of our salvation, it is even more so for God’s Glory. If our weakness is great, His Power is that of God. It will be sufficient for us to enter into God’s Heart and draw from It the blessings reclaimed by our misery. St. Philomena comes not only to console us, but also to instruct us. The first is a lesson of humility. We see suddenly coming from a forgotten tomb fragments of clay, hardened by fire upon which are traced the signs of torment associated with the palm of glory. And, what did she do to merit these honors? She humiliated herself unto death. We see the hardened blood which has shined with the brilliance of the most precious gems. We may speculate many things of this virgin-martyr, but the one thing we know, without doubt, is that she lived and died for Jesus Christ. We know that, at times, God chooses the things that are not, or that seem to be nothing, to confound what is, or that which believes itself to be something.

In the case of St. Philomena, God could not have chosen any better: A child! A woman! A virgin! In a century as corrupt as ours, virginity is a condition largely ridiculed by the world. Fifteen hundred years in profound obscurity. Her martyrdom is considered to be a futile heroism, and often passed over as a fool’s action in our day.

Dear Mrs. Patti Melvin,These are photos taken at my parish of St. John the Baptist. A friend of Matt Werner offered money for this prayer garden at the parish. We gathered together to honor Mary during her special month of May. I blessed the statue and we all prayed the Rosary together. The people were so happy to have the beautiful red Rosaries you sent us with the Miraculous Medals attached to each one. We prayed the Litany of Our Lady with special liturgical prayers dedicated to the Virgin Mary. We are offering Sacred Masses and praying the Rosary each day, especially for our benefactors and members of the Living Rosary. Your help and gifts bring great joy to our people. Many youth took part in this Marian celebration.

With prayers and respect,

MAY BOUQUET OF THIRTY ONE DAYS OF MASSES FOR YOUR LOVED ONES

THERE IS NO GREAT LOVE!

As we enter the Month of May, let us vie with one another to excel to the limit of our ability to honor, love, imitate and exalt the Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth. The practice of honoring Mary in the month of May comes to us from the Golden Age of Faith, the 13th Century, a time when great cathedrals were being built and most of them were dedicated to the Mother of God. The Jesuits established the Sodality of Mary as a Lay Order in the Church, promoting personal consecration to Mary by placing themselves under Her care and protection, that She might lead them safely to Her Divine Son.

The practice of keeping the month of May for Mary was granted an indulgence by Pope Pius VII in 1815 and, in 1859, Pope Pius IX granted a Plenary Indulgence to this practice. When the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré in Rue du Bac, She asked that a special organization be founded in the Church for the very purpose of promoting the May devotions and spreading the Miraculous Medal.

The Children of Mary was founded by the Vincentian Order, and the Daughters of Charity spread the devotion primarily through the schools. The French Revolution took its toll and it was a long while before the devotion requested by Our Lady was once again revived. Today, the devotion flourishes throughout the world. During the month of May, let us enshrine Mary’s image, procure Her glory and extend the service of our Queen and Mother! In all the major apparitions of Mary, the Mother of God appeared to ask of Her humble seers the favor of having a church built on that hallowed ground where pilgrims would come to venerate and honor Her by their attendance at Holy Mass and the reception of the Sacraments, thus rendering to God the Father eternal glory, thanksgiving and reparation for the sins of mankind. “Build on this spot a chapel.” This is the cause most dear to the Heart of Our Mother. Listen to Her pleas and hasten to Her requests. She is our Patroness, Advocate, Mistress and Mother!

In honor and obedience, thanksgiving and petition, entrust all your loved ones to Mary through your gift of a special Bouquet of 31 days of Sacred Liturgies. Crown Her with the roses empurpled in the Precious Blood of Her Divine Son, the Source of all Salvation! A lovely Mass card will be sent out to you for each one you enroll.

SUGGESTED STIPEND DONATION: $5.00 each for Enrollment in the MAY Bouquet of thirty one days of Masses for your Loved Ones: PRINT VERY CLEARLY EACH NAME!

Saint Philomena, Virgin, Martyr and Wonder-Worker

A SAINT FOR OUR TIMES!

+ Pierre Tobie, Bishop of Lausanne and Geneva, July 4, 1834

It is written of Divine Wisdom, not only that It arranges the means, but also It reaches the goal. Gentleness is remarkable in the former and strength of character in the latter; a certain sweetness permeates both. It is strength which obtains the goal. For this reason, we must discipline ourselves. There must be no hesitation. The crowds thronged around Jesus Christ to witness His miracles. His instruction to them was: Be eager not for perishable nourishment, but for that which will enable you to live eternally.

St. Philomena received her mission from Jesus Christ in the heights of Heaven. It seems that the King of kings to Whom all power was given from the Father, distinguished her in the midst of the assembly of Saints by a look of particular satisfaction and preferential Love. Go, I have chosen you and wish to place you in the fields of My Church like a new sowing destined to make it productive. You will bring to Me the fruits which My Hand prepares for you; may thy firmness augment for Me, the savor. The virgin hears and her apostolate is begun. It is as if a cloud has been lifted and one, hidden for so many centuries, is now revealed as a bright light. Everywhere, there are shouts of admiration. Miracles abound. Will it be a sterile glory? NO! Such is not the object of the Saint’s extraordinary mission. What is its aim? What is the plan the Divine Master has for her?

Jesus Christ, Our Savior, wishes to use the glorious Philomena to console us, instruct us and encourage us. She will be our Anchor of Hope!

It is consolation that St. Philomena brings to all the Church’s children. They do need her in these unhappy times to which the words of Saint John so well apply: My dear children, we have come to the last hour. You have been told that the anti-Christ is coming, or that there are a great number of anti-Christs in the world. And, this is why we affirm that the last hour has tolled. Preserve the doctrine, my children, which was taught to you from the beginning. It will keep you constantly united with the Father and the Son. When Jesus Christ will appear in all His Glory, you will show yourself to Him with confidence and you will not be confounded. Does it not seem that the well beloved disciple wrote to us of our very own times?

Weekly News Flash from the Universal Living Rosary Association of Saint Philomena, Wednesday May 6, 2015

Tuesday, August 25th, 2015
Dear Apostles and Benefactors of the Living Rosary,

We may ask ourselves why it is that our prayers do not always seem to be answered. Perhaps, we do not pray with a pure intention or our pride and self-love make us unworthy to be heard. NO! Ask and the gift will come! Christ said, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and all things will be given unto you.” If we ask according to Christ, and are entirely surrendered to Him, we will receive what we petition. Those who seek God’s honor and abandon all earthly cares to Him, find themselves miraculously fed and clothed. If we do not obtain that for which we ask, it is no reason for losing confidence in God! If we are seeking our own will, we do not pray aright. We must pray for that which God bids us to pray. We need the words of the Our Father to tell us what we must ask for. If we pray thus, all will be granted to us. The words must be accompanied by deeds, to prove their sincerity. Hallowed be Thy name! Thy Kingdom come! Thy will be done! Give us this day our daily bread! Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them who trespass against us! Lead us not into temptation! Deliver us from evil!

If God takes a long time to answer our prayers, it is to make our longing more keen and our faith stronger. Our prayer must be persevering. God sees our tears, and our sighs are not hidden from Him. God’s plan is for us to be hidden in Christ and our will to become one with His. Practically speaking, it means joyful fulfilling of daily duties for Him and with Him. God wishes that we have gladness in full measure. Christ gave His Life for His enemies and with His dying breath prayed for His murderers. He let His side be opened to give birth to the Church. Have Mercy on me, O God, in Thy Love; In the depth of Thy tenderness, wipe out my offense. Wash me from all iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Whenever God’s providence gives us the ability to help the sick and poor, we must feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick and give hospitality to strangers. Our love and our compassion must go out to all who suffer! May Christ make us strong in charity, lovers of all men without exception, ever returning good for evil, and filled with compassion for all mankind. Only he who humbles himself shall be exalted. From His Incarnation to His Death on the Cross, Almighty God strove to glorify the Father.

Filled with confidence and hope, we approach the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus and beg Him to be gracious to you and bless your petitions and requests most abundantly.

I impart to all of you, my priestly blessing:

In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Dear Apostle of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

How very grateful we are for your wonderfully generous donation in support of our missionary efforts in the world today. Time is short and we must act now. Your gift helps us reach hundreds of suffering souls. They will be keeping you in their prayers of thanksgiving. You give them hope!

We hear of new attacks on Christians every day in the mission field and weep for America, too, as treason and tyranny come to our own land. May Our Lady, Queen of the Church Militant, obtain a glorious victory over this great evil. We thank you with all our hearts! Let us Soldier on! Man was created for happiness. His whole being craves for rest and peace. So long as life lasts, he will long and hope for them. It is an urge which is impossible to extinguish, yet impossible to entirely satisfy here upon earth. Sadly, many of us do not understand the nature of true happiness.

Man’s heart was created too great to be filled with what is finite. Only in the all-Good and eternal God can happiness be found. Hope is the sun of our lives, making them fruitful. Without hope, all life fades; without hope, there can be no enthusiasm, activity, joy, happiness or love. Hope is the driving force of every action. He who ploughs, ploughs in the hope of harvesting; he who fights, fights as long as there is hope for victory. It is the same in the spiritual life. No one would continue to love God if there was no hope of a reward. Is it not God Himself Who is that reward? By holy hope, we desire Him Who is our greatest good.

By hope, we trust that His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, will give us the means to possess Him in the reward that awaits us in Heaven. Hope gives us courage, strength and confidence in the midst of trials and sufferings, in contradictions and apparent failure. God enables us to gain Heaven by giving us Grace and Free Will, and He expects us to use them untiringly to the very last. When evening comes and our working days are ended, we will be ready to bear our cross patiently and, by prayer and sacrifice, live in the hope of that inheritance which is incorruptible and stored up for us in Heaven! We are on our way to our True Home, to be forever united with our Father, whose happiness we will share for all Eternity.

With the Good Shepherd, we will lack nothing!

Dear Patti Melvin,

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for the box with materials and Sacramentals which we just received. Last Friday, we sent 83 lists of new members enrolled in April.

Divine Mercy Sunday was a big success: Fr. Elimar introduced to the faithful a little booklet with the assigned Decade and invited them to take one home. We enrolled 540 new members and send you the pictures.

Among the photos are some of my family members: my husband, daughter, parents-in-law, niece and nephew, and Flor. They are preparing written materials for the month of May, the month of Our Lady. Soon it will be Pentecost, Our Lady of Fatima, the anniversary of the apparitions in Costa Rica of Our Lady of Peace, etc. They are putting a sticker on each little booklet with the assigned Decade and placing it in a little bag with a holy card. Could you please let us know if you received our envelope with 222 lists? By now, you should have received lists of 5,225 new members

We send our love and wish Our Lord’s abundant blessings on us.

Dear Apostle of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

We have received your wonderfully generous donation in the post. This gift from your heart is a great help for us in doing the world-wide missionary work in which we are engaged. These times are very difficult and this work is vital to families, Nations and Holy Mother the Church. It is a beautiful act of reparation to the Heart of Christ and Our Blessed Mother. May God reward you abundantly both in time and throughout eternity!

Ven. Pauline Jaricot’s life and work was, above all else, to help by every possible means in the salvation of souls. Her home of Lorette became a bustling center where all, who needed to come in contact with a devoted heart and a firm and tender hand, were sure to find a friend. Her hospitality was nobly and generously exercised. She embraced every kind of work and ministered to every need.

The essence of her rule of life was to sacrifice every private devotion and every occupation, all her personal interests, for the good and consolation of others and to be always the humble servant of the servants of God. Pauline’s charity was boundless. Letters from all parts of the world gave witness to her charity. Her purse was at the service of all who were in need. The treasures of her soul were equally lavished on anyone in danger or in sorrow. Both the rich and the poor came to her in their trials to unburden their hearts. Pauline listened to them with the full attention, which expresses more eloquently than words real sympathy and interest in another’s misfortune. Her own work was then done during the hours meant for sleep and rest.

Pauline did all in her power to render those around her happy for this leads to prosperity and draws down upon us the blessings of God. The sanctification of the Priesthood was one of her constant thoughts and the subject of her most earnest prayers. Pauline united the two most powerful weapons with which to conquer the Heart of God and that of man: unlimited self-sacrifice and ardent charity. She wished to love without measure, without end!

Our beloved Pauline, a great prodigy of heroic charity, suffered betrayal and underwent a slow torture of calumny, humiliation, ingratitude and the loss of every human consolation. She knows what you suffer; she feels your pain. Go to Pauline, open your heart and have great confidence in her power to help you!

OUR LADY OF LOURDES AND THE MIRACLE OF THE MARNE

When we think of Our Lady of Lourdes, whose feast day we celebrate on February 11, we think first of the many miracles from the miraculous spring of water that Our Lady gave as a gift for healing the sick, both of body and heart. Many of these miracles have been studied by the Church and declared miraculous, that is, of heavenly origin. But, still, there are many other happenings that have not been pronounced as miracles but which still remain unexplained. The Battle of the Marne is one of these happenings.

Even the history books refer to this battle as a great MIRACLE of World War I: The Miracle of the Marne. But because there is no official decision from the Church concerning the authenticity of this event, we are left to draw our own conclusions.

The “MIRACLE”

In September of 1914, the German Army was making its way towards Paris. They were advancing so quickly down the valley of the Marne River that they were convinced already of their victory over the French, and chanted among themselves, “ln Paris, in two days’ time!”

Paris itself was in total chaos. The French government had already left the capital for Bordeaux and the panicking civilians were fleeing the city on foot, horseback, train or any other means possible. Though the British had sent reinforcements to help their French allies, the Germans still far-outnumbered them. To make matters worse, the French Seventh Division, coming in from the frontier to join the Sixth Army in defending Paris, was unable to move because of the rail system, which was “choked” with fleeing civilians.

The desperate situation prompted Gen. Joseph Gallieni, military governor of the French Army, to dispatch the emergency troop reinforcements by using a fleet of Parisian taxi cabs. In one night, some 600 taxis ferried approximately 6,000 French reserve infantry troops to the front.

This was on the 8th of September, feast day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the same time in the Diocese of Paris, the Bishop of Meaux, Cardinal Marbeau, made the promise to Our Lady that, should She spare their city, he would build a monument in her honor when the war was over. And, all across France, people were on their knees, with Rosary in hand, humbly beseeching the Virgin to protect them in their great hour of need. We can believe, therefore, that, for this reason, on that very same day, the inexplicable happened: the entire German army suddenly retreated, turning back from Paris. It was later reported that some 100,000 German soldiers saw the Virgin Mary “pushing back” the German Army.

Most of these men kept silent because they had been ordered “under pain of death” not to speak of the apparition to anyone. But a letter addressed to the Carmel of Pontoise recounts that: “On 3rd January 1915, a German priest, wounded and taken prisoner during the Battle of the Marne, died in a French ambulance where he was cared for by some nuns. He had told them: “As a soldier, I should keep silent, but

“We saw the Virgin Mary, dressed all in white, with a blue belt, leaning Her head toward Paris.”

As a priest, I must say what I have seen. During the Battle of the Marne, we were surprised to be pushed into retreat, because our numbers were legion compared to the French, and we expected very soon to arrive in Paris. But we saw the Virgin Mary, dressed all in white, with a blue belt, leaning her head toward Paris. She turned her back to us, and with her right hand seemed to push us away … I saw her myself and a good number of my companions also.” (This description of Our Lady, “… dressed all in white, with a blue belt …” is the same description given by St. Bernadette at Lourdes, France in 1858.) About the same time, two German officers, also wounded and prisoners of war, were admitted into a French hospital run by the Red Cross. When they saw there a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, a nurse (who could speak German) heard them exclaim: “Die Frau von der Marne!” “Oh, the Virgin of the Marne!” She asked them to speak about this, but they refused. (http://thewandererpress.com/featured-today/september-1914-the-miracle-of-the-marne/)

The MIRACLE at the Battle of the Marne was reported in the newspapers all across France in January 1915, just one hundred years ago. When we recall that World War I continued through November 1918 and resulted in 16 million deaths, leaving 20 million wounded, we catch a glimpse of the sorrow Our Blessed Mother must have had on our behalf. War is humanity’s great failure. Today, with wars and conflicts continuing throughout the world, we need to remind ourselves that Mary intercedes for both her faithful and her unfaithful children. What hope of mercy must have been given to both those spared in France as well as the soldiers who saw the vision and went on to suffer terrible battles for three more years!

The heart of the message of Our Lady given to St. Bernadette at Lourdes, stated simply, is a call to the sick of body and soul, that God loves us as we are, and is always calling us to conversion. Let us turn back to the Father, through Our Lady’s invitation, and as the Bishop of Meaux once pleaded with Our Lady to spare Paris, let us also plead with her to spare our countries from another World War, and to help us to find healing, not only of body but also of soul.

Monument of Our Lady of the Marne, erected by Cardinal Marbeau after the War.

The inscription beneath the statue reads: “You will go no further.”

God works miracles now and again to give the Faithful confidence that it is He Who is speaking; and if He is graciously pleased to do so at Lourdes, it is because He wants us to listen to Our Lady’s words to Bernadette, calling us all to Repentance and Prayer.

OUR LADY OF LOURDES, PRAY FOR US!
