Happy Birthday to Our Queen and Mother!
God’s “City Of Refuge”
The Immaculate Heart of Mary
Over the Road of Life, the Divine Outcast of the world wanders day and night. Before each heart-door, He begs for admittance. Music and song and laughter reach the Outcast’s ear. He knocks, but no one hears; so heart-sore and weary, He moves away. Many give Him admission, but there are very few who give Him their hearts! Bethlehem, in callous indifference, drove Him forth. From the city that rejected God, Jesus found refuge in the arms of the Mother who loved Him. Nestled close to her immaculate bosom, He found the protection and warmth of her maternal heart. Driven from Jerusalem and lacking hospitality even from His priests, cast out by countless hearts filled with greed and cluttered with materialism, exiled and rejected, Christ found His City of Refuge in the sanctuary of the Heart of Mary, paradise of the elect! The Immaculata built for Him a Holy of Holies and a house of gold. She made reparation to Him for the disloyalty of all those about Him. Millions of gates today are barred to Him by the iron bolt of sin. Will we offer our hearts to God? What better way to make our hearts God’s “City of Refuge” than to make them a CITY OF MARY!
Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God, chose the incomparable Virgin Mary from among all creatures to be His Mother and deigned to be nourished and governed by her. In His infinite goodness, He also gave her to be our Queen, our Mother and our sure Refuge in all our needs. He, therefore, wishes us to honor her as He honors her, and to love her as He loves her. Mary always held and will hold forever the first place in the Sacred Heart of her Divine Son; she always was and will never cease to be the first object of His Love after the Eternal Father; and so He wishes that, next to God, she should be the principle object of our devotion. For this reason, after the veneration we owe to the Divine Majesty of God, we cannot render a greater service to Jesus Christ or do anything more pleasing to Him than to serve and honor His most worthy Mother!
Mary is Heaven’s masterpiece, the Empress of Heaven, its joy and its glory, in whom everything is heavenly. She is clothed with the eternal Sun of the Godhead and with all the perfection of the Divine Essence, which surround, fill and penetrate her to such an extent that she has become transformed, as it were, into the power, goodness and holiness of God. She has the moon under her feet to show that the entire world is beneath her. None is above her save only God, and she holds absolute sway over all created things. The heart of the Mother of God is a world of marvels, an abyss of wonders, the source and principle of all the virtues which we admire in our glorious Queen. Her heart is a vast sea of grace, a measureless ocean of perfection, an immense furnace of love. The heart of Mary is the spiritual part of the soul and the heart divine, for it is none other than the love of God.
Mary’s admirable heart was the source of two precious lives at once, the source of the holy life of the Mother of God and of her only Son, the humanly divine as well as the divinely human life of the God-Man. What union, what intimacy, what understanding, what correspon¬dence between these two Hearts! The fire in these two hearts was constantly inflamed with the breath of the Holy Spirit! Blessed, indeed, are the hearts of the true children of Mary, who strive to live in conformity with the most holy Heart of their Mother. Think! Think of the honor that is due to her Heart, most noble part of the virginal body that gave human flesh to the Eternal Word, forever the center of adoration of the angels and saints in Heaven! What honor is due to her heart, life principle of the Mother of God and of God-made-man! Above all, what great veneration is merited by the Heart that God Himself loved and glorified most highly, the Heart that adored and loved God more perfectly than all the hearts in Heaven and upon earth!
Jesus is the principle of life in His most holy Mother. So it is that He is the Heart of her Heart and the life of her life. Every homage rendered to Mary is rendered to her Son, likewise he who dishonors her dishonors Him! Indeed every heart, every pen and every tongue should be employed in loving, in writing and in speaking of the incomparable Heart of Mary. The heavens are a special work of God’s Hands, but the Heart of the Mother of God is the unequaled masterpiece of His omnipotence, His unfathomable wisdom and His infinite goodness.
“The admirable Heart of Mary is the Heaven of Heavens,” says St. Bernard, “because it contains the entire Church as all the children of the Church receive through Mary the life of grace.” The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, like a good mother, carries all her children in her Heart. God resides more gloriously and works far greater wonders in the Heart of Mary than the sun in the universe. What is the throne of Christ, if not the Heart of His dearest Mother! It is the consolation of the suffering souls in Purgatory, the joy of the faithful on earth, the exaltation of the angels and saints in Heaven … the delight of the Most Blessed Trinity! Take away the Heart of Mary, the true sun of the Christian World, and what is left but darkness, the shadow of death and the night of the grave.
Do you fear to slight the incomparable goodness of the Heart of Jesus, your God and Redeemer, if you invoke the charity of His Mother’s Heart? Do you not know that Mary is nothing, possesses nothing, and can do nothing except in, through and by Jesus? Do you not know that Jesus is everything and that He can accomplish everything through Her? Do you not know Jesus made Mary’s Heart as it is, and that HE WILLED IT to be the fountain of light, of consolation and of every possible grace for those who will have recourse to it in their necessities? Do you forget that not only does Jesus reside and dwell perpetually in Mary’s Heart, but that coming to the Heart of Mary means to honor and invoke Jesus?
You will remember that the most humble and pure Virgin ravished and attracted to herself the adorable Heart of the Eternal Father, His Beloved Son, and that He became the Heart of her Heart. Jesus is, therefore, the true Heart of Mary!
O Jesus, true Heart of Mary, take possession of our hearts, and draw them nigh to Thee. Inspire them to love, desire, seek and relish only Thee. May they ever long for Thee, may they always seek their rest and happiness in Thee, may they remain in Thee forever and be consumed in the ardent furnace of Thy Divine Heart so as to be transformed eternally in Thee!
Mary is, indeed, the glorious City of God. May our hearts be conformed and contained in the Heart of Mary that they may be eternally God’s City of Refuge!
O Divine Fire that burns in the Noble Heart of Our Glorious Mother,
Come into the hearts of All Men!
Child of Mary!
You are the envoy of the Immaculate. You profess a particular obligation to work for the salvation of souls. You must be made of fire like Elias, a flame like St. John the Baptist. Each of you must be a burning furnace, a radiant torch, aglow within, shining without; ardent for love of God and shining before men; ardent in prayer and brilliant in action; ardent for the glory of God and luminous with charity for your neighbor. But, where will you light your torch and obtain the fire with which you must enkindle the hearts of men? It must be in the furnace of the Holy Heart of the Mother of Fair Love.
Having lighted and seized your torch, you will set everything on fire to the right and to the left; that is, you will inflame the hearts of the Just and, at the same time, you will set fire to the hearts of sinners!
Have courage! Go forth into the world
Drawing all hearts to Jesus through Mary!
Happy Birthday, Maria Bambina
Sweet Child Mary, destined to be the Mother of God and our sovereign and loving Mother, by the prodigies of grace you lavish upon us, mercifully listen to my humble supplications. In the needs which press upon me from every side and especially in my present tribulation, I place all my trust in you.O Holy Child, by the privileges granted to you alone and by the merits which you have acquired, be merciful to me this day. Show that the source of spiritual favors and the continuous benefits which you dispense are inexhaustible, because your power with the Heart of God is unlimited. Deign through the immense profusion of graces with which the Most High has enriched you from the first moment of your Immaculate Conception, grant me, O Celestial Child, my petition, and I shall eternally praise the goodness of your Heart.

Why We Do What We Do – brief background of the intention of the Universal Living Rosary Association of Saint Philomena
Pauline Jaricot, was the youngest of eight children, born of a wealthy and devout silk merchant on July 21, 1799, in Lyon France. When Pauline was in her early teens she took a hard fall and was at the point of death. Overwhelmed with grief, Pauline’s mother offered her life to God if only He would spare Pauline. She died and Pauline was completely cured.
At the age of 18, in a day and a night, Pauline Jaricot composed the little booklet which breathes with the fire of Divine Love with which she was already enflamed. After being examined the work was found to be irreproachable. Her spiritual advisor was concerned that she had a contemplative vocation and urged her to follow it.
Pauline is the foundress of the two greatest works of the Church in the 19 Century-The Propagation of the Faith and The Living Rosary. These two great works were the very first organizations of the Church in France, Switzerland, Belgium and America after the devastation of the French Revolution. They are the fruit of the blood of martyrs.
The Propagation of the Faith is the mission of Christ upon earth, born of His merciful Heart. Christ’s Most Precious Blood poured into the Heart of Pauline that it might be spilled out upon the world. The Propagation of the Faith had its origin in God. Pauline was given the first impulse to work and develop it, shelter it as an immolation and return it to the Church, fertile and abundantly fruitful.
This being done, Pauline retired to the life of a contemplative for three years. This cost her greatly, but out of the sacrifice and sufferings of her obedience, was crystallized into reality a work of extreme simplicity, The Living Rosary. It is to her we owe the wonderful thought of distributing amongst 15 persons the 15 decades of the Holy Rosary. These groups of 15 consisted of “the good, the mediocre and those individuals who had only good will; 15 coals, one being on fire, three or four partially warmed and the others cold. Bring them all together, and in a short time you have a furnace! This admirable association made it perfectly suited to become an instrument of zeal. Each member volunteered to donate a sum of 5 francs a year and bring in 5 new members. Most all the bishops either by note or long letter, recommended the Living Rosary as an essential association for their diocese. Pauline was want to say, “We will be united in prayer with all the peoples of the Universe–a Universal Living Rosary!”
Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit she adopted the means which had proved so successful with the Propagation of the Faith: PRAYER, PENNY and PROPAGATION. Each member was linked spiritually to all the other members, forming a union of hearts. The prayer of one belonged to all. These coals brought together, fanned by mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary, would become an INFERNO! Pauline challenged her associates by proposing the great universal missionary intentions of the conversion of sinners, preservation of the Faith and its propagation in all the world–the exaltation of Holy Mother the Church.
Pauline inflamed the 2 million members of the Association with her profound, ardent and practical newsletters. A chaplain would explain that her writings were for their meetings what the epistles of St. Paul were to the first Christians. The Living Rosary had two aims, Pauline explained: first, to bring the people of France to a prayerful way of life by easy stages; second, to promote good reading habits. All funds collected were to be used for the purchase and distribution of solid Catholic books and pamphlets, and various devotional articles for the home to make France a really Christian country again. The Association prospered remarkably and an average of 1000 religious articles left the home of Pauline every day for the missions.
A friend of the Jaricot Family, Fr. Magallon, visited Pauline to show his appreciation of the generosity he had received from their hands, and gave Pauline a most remarkable gift. In fact, it was beyond price, being a major relic of Philomena and the only one of its kind in France. Pauline encouraged everyone to pray for Philomena’s canonization for if they did she would surely bless the work of the Living Rosary.
Pauline transmitted the fire which consumed her to the other members of the Living Rosary through her circular letters, personal interviews and the superabundance of her spiritual life. In loving, serving and sacrificing herself, she made Jesus loved and served. Pauline Marie Jaricot is the glory of France. This great contemplative is the mother of the missions. She was God’s instrument to give the Church the admirable works, which today procure the extension of His reign to the ends of the earth.
Pauline gave everything to Christ, her health, her life, her good name, her affections and her fortune, that you and I might have this precious gift of the Living Rosary. Finding her offering acceptable and worthy, Christ gathered up her gifts, and so she would more perfectly resemble Him, HE PUT HER ON THE CROSS. An infamous betrayal would rob her of her fortune; she would be assailed by creditors, tribunals, rebuffs, calumny and scorn. God permitted this so that she who lived for Him and for the salvation of her brothers, would in her last days, follow Christ, who died for those who condemned Him.
Let not the fire which burns in the Heart of Pauline die out. As a disciple of Christ, Pauline united the two most powerful weapons to conquer the Heart of God and that of man–self sacrifice and charity without measure, WITHOUT END! We who are her children, must go forward with the work of our Mother’s Heart, the very Heart of Christ, and pour out upon the earth His Most Precious Blood through our Daily Decade and our apostolic action. Viva Ven Pauline Jaricot, Victim Soul and Apostle, Martyr of Charity!
