Weekly News Flash from the Universal Living Rosary Association of Saint Philomena, Wednesday March 11, 2015

Dear Apostle of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Thank you enormously for your very generous donation to help with our missionary work in the USA and abroad. Our prayers are with you and our deep gratitude. The Spring newsletter will be ready in two weeks’ time, with the May Mass flyer. May God reward your great charity! Have a Holy Lenten Season and Glorious Easter!

Our absolutely vital mission today is to bring the Immaculate Heart of Mary to all men. There is no better way than to enlist them in praying a Decade of the Most Holy Rosary every day. Christ is the King of Kings, the ruler of all men. His Law is based on justice and charity. No man can escape its authority! Neither can any Nation. This thought should be remembered in our day of dictators and tyrants. Christ is the new Adam; Mary is the new Eve. We honor His Sacred Heart; we honor her Immaculate Heart. He is Our King and She is Our Queen!

After Mary’s assumption into Heaven, Christ crowned her Queen of Heaven. She was not queen because He crowned her; He crowned her because She was QUEEN! Mary is an army in battle array! When we succeed in bringing Christ to a soul, we have simply helped Mary in her mission of giving Christ to the world. It is not we who bring the grace of conversion to a family member or neighbor. It is Mary working through us! There will be defeats and disappointments, many of them, because things are not supposed to be easy for us in this world. But, in the end, working under Mary, Our Queen and Commander-in-chief, we can bring Christ back to the world!

She is Our Mother, Our Mediatrix and Our Queen! Of Mary, there is never enough!

We cannot be content to save our own souls. We bear the duty of apostles with a mission to teach and convert. If we shrink from this duty, our own faith will decline. We must do all we can to share our faith with others. The creeping paralysis of secularism has taken hold of men’s hearts. Never was the devil so active! Let EVERYONE take up a DAILY DECADE!

One with you in the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The Miracle of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God
( August 5, 1675 )

This Icon draws us into the heavenly realm is miraculous enough; yet because of the faithlessness of people throughout history, God has continued to work miracles through material objects, including holy Images. This is just a story about one miracle, performed through one single Icon: the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God.

The Pochaev Mountain is in western Ukraine and it is there in the 14th century that an appearance of the Mother of God with her Savior was granted to two monks and a nearby shepherd. After the vision, a single footprint remained in the mountainside, from which a spring emerged. The previously uninhabited mountain became the site of a monastery dedicated to the miracle. Over 200 years later, the monastery was visited by a Greek Bishop, Neophit, who left behind as a gift, an Icon of the Theotokos from Constantinople. This is the Icon which came to bear the monastery’s name: the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God.

In 1675, a Turkish army made its way to the Pochaev Mountain, determined to expand the Dar al-Islam. The monastery, being a monastery, was incapable of withstanding an assault, and so despite the presence of armed defenders many gave up hope that Pochaev could survive.

On the morning of July 23 (August 5 in the modern, Gregorian calendar), Pochaev’s abbot instructed the monastics to ask for the intercessions of the Mother of God and Job, a previous monk whose relics were laid in the monastery. With the Turks massed at the foot of the mountain preparing their assault, the monks began their Heavenly petitions before the Icon of the Mother of God:

“O Queen of the Heavenly Hosts …”

With these words, a vision of the Mother of God appeared in the sky, with the monk Job beside her in prayerful petition, along with an army of angels, swords unsheathed. At this appearance, the defenders were over-joyed, whilst the besieging Turks were terrified. Such is the polarizing power of Heavenly Images.

In panic, the Turks fired arrows into the sky at the image but the arrows simply fell back to earth upon the attackers. Further panicked, the Turks turned to flee, trampling each other in the process. The defenders rushed out of the monastery to take prisoners from the routed army. These prisoners later found freedom in Christ, and many stayed on as monks at Pochaev.

The Icon above is a copy of the Pochaev Icon. The border of clouds represents the vision of Mary with her Child, Our Savior, being heavenly. Underneath is the footprint upon which the monastery (also shown) was founded.

The Pochaev Icon produced many other miracles over the years, and is still known as a wonder-working image to this day. Today is commemorated but one of these miracles.

Those who pray before your holy icon, O Lady,
Are vouchsafed healing and receive the knowledge of the True Faith,
And they repel the attacks of the Muslim horde.
Therefore, entreat remission of sins
For us who fall down before you.
Enlighten our hearts to thoughts of piety,
And raise a prayer to your Son to save our souls.
( Troparion (hymn) of the Pochaev Icon )

There came the thirteenth year of my life. The Peace of Christ which, until that day had reigned in the household and kingdom of my father, was disturbed by the proud and powerful Emperor Diocletian who unjustly declared war against us. My father, realizing his inferior strength, decided to go to Rome to make a pact of peace with the Emperor. So great was the tender affection my father had for me that he could not bear me out of his sight for an hour, and so I went with him on his journey to Rome. Rather than be left without us, my mother came too.

Arriving in Rome, he asked an audience with the tyrant and, when it was granted, took me and my mother with him to the Palace of the Caesars. While my father pleaded his cause and pointed out the injustice of the war that was made on him, the Emperor kept looking at me, and finally interrupted my father, saying: “Do not distress yourself further. Your anxiety is at an end. Be consoled. You shall have all the imperial force for your own protection if you will but consent to a single condition: namely to give me your daughter, Philomena, for my wife.”

My parents accepted his condition and, on our return home, sought to convince me of my great fortune in becoming the Empress of the Romans. I rejected the offer without a moment’s hesitation, saying that I was already betrothed to Jesus Christ, as I had made a vow of virginity to Him when I was eleven. My father tried to persuade me that, as a child and a daughter, I had no right to dispose of myself and he used all his authority to make me accept the proposal. But, my Divine Spouse gave me the strength to persevere in my resolution. Then, my mother had recourse to caresses, begging me to have pity on my father, on her and on my country. I replied: “God is my Father and Heaven is my Mother.”

My parents were unable to do anything in the face of my refusal, which would be taken by the Emperor as a mere pretext of bad faith and the excuse of a deceiver. Diocletian ordered me to be brought into his presence. My father came for me but, seeing me unshaken in my resolution, he and my mother cast themselves at my feet and implored me to do as they wished, saying: “Daughter, have pity on us, your parents! Have pity on our country and our kingdom!” I replied: “God and virginity come first. My kingdom and my country are Heaven.”

Diocletian, at first, received me with every kindness and honor to make me accede to his request and to give him my promise. But, he obtained nothing from me. Seeing me absolutely firm and losing all hope of gaining his desire, he began to threaten me. He could not overcome me. Then, in a fit of fury, raging like a devil, he launched this threat: “If you won’t have me as a lover, you shall have me as a tyrant!” I replied, “I neither care for you as a lover, nor fear you as a tyrant.” The Emperor, visibly infuriated, ordered me to be shut up in a dungeon under the armory of the Imperial Palace. I was chained hand and foot, and fed once a day on bread and water. He came himself daily to renew his offer. My heavenly Spouse took care of me. I never ceased to recommend myself to my Jesus and His most pure Mother.

On the thirty-sixth day, there appeared to me the most holy Virgin, surrounded by the light of Paradise, with Her Little Son in Her arms and She spoke thus to me: “Daughter, you will remain three more days in this dungeon and, then, on the fortieth day of your imprisonment you will leave this place of sorrow.” At these words, I was filled with joy; but then she continued to speak: “When you leave your cell, you will be exposed to a great battle of atrocious torments for the sake of my Son.” Thereupon, I trembled and saw myself in the anguish of death, but the heavenly Queen gave me courage, saying thus:

“My Daughter, you are dearer to me than others because you have my name and the name of my Son. You are called Lumina and my Son is called Light, Sun, Star; and I am called Dawn, Star, Moon. I will be your helper. Now is the hour of human weakness which humbles you, but there will come the fortitude of grace which will assist you and you shall have, besides the Angel who guards you, the protection of the Archangel St. Gabriel whose name signifies the Strength of God. This Archangel was my protector on earth, and I will send him to help you as my Daughter, beloved among all Daughters. Gabriel will assist you and you shall be victorious.” These words revived my courage. The vision disappeared, leaving much fragrance in the prison, which consoled me.

Dear Benefactors of the Living Rosary,

Thank you for your wonderful support which enables me to print these beautiful materials in my native language, Urdu. These materials are not available anywhere else in the country. The people love them and stand in long lines to receive them, free of charge, along with their assigned Decade.

I have visited St. Francis Xavier School, St. Theresa School, Calvary Model School, Cardinal Cordeiro High School and Good Shepherd School and enrolled the children and teachers in the ULRA and distributed the Sacramentals. I also visited St. Paul’s Church, Holy Rosary Church, St. Peter’s Church and two Catholic Churches in Korangi and Chanser, Karachi. After introducing the devotion of the Living Rosary, I enrolled new members, who happily received their assigned Decade and Sacramentals.

We keep you in our prayers. Thank you and God bless all of you!

The tragic hour the aged Simeon had foreseen in his terrible prophecy came to pass. The Cross stands out against a cloud-filled sky. A dreadful silence resounds through that city liable for the murder of its God. Jesus is expiring. At the foot of the gibbet whereon the great Victim is nailed stands Mary, motionless, silent, engulfed in untold grief, gazing upon her dying God. What created mind could fully understand her suffering? We are familiar with trials: loss of material goods is not fatal and bodily ills make our flesh tremble, yet our minds can remain at peace. Doubts, discouragement and despondency cast shadows on our lives and may make it unbearable, but the greatest suffering springs from the heart when love is wounded.

Mary suffered through the love she bore her Son. Hers was a martyrdom which surpasses that of the martyrdom of blood. To comprehend the intensity of her pain, we would have to comprehend the depth of her love. She gave herself unreservedly to her Son, for original sin had not tarnished her Immaculate Heart. Now, her beloved Son, endures before her very eyes the most cruel, the most unjust, the most ignominious of tortures. Step by step, She follows the somber procession wending its way up Calvary. She witnesses the horrible scene of crucifixion, hears the heavy hammer drive the sharp nails into the adorable hands and feet of her Child, tearing His Flesh as His Precious Blood spills onto the ground. The soldiers jeer and the high priests mock His goodness, His holiness and His very divinity. Not for a moment does She abandon Him, nor does She miss a single moment of His suffering. When Jesus dies, She is at His Feet. There is a phenomenon the medieval philosophers called ecstasy. Love takes the heart, so to speak, of the one who loves and exchanges it with the heart of the beloved. All of Jesus’ sufferings resonated in Mary’s Heart. When the soldier’s lance pierced His Heart, it simultaneously pierced the Virgin Mother’s Soul.

When a heavy cross is laid upon our shoulders, we accuse God of unfairness and uncaring cruelty, and we abandon our faith. “How could a good God do this to us!" Did the Father not love His only Son? Did God not love the purest Virgin whom He had made the Mother of His Son? Yet, God found no more precious gift for His Son and His Mother than suffering! Through suffering, the great work of Redemption is accomplished. God sends suffering to purify us and to save us. When suffering comes, we must trust God, lovingly receive the cross and know that the victory of Easter awaits us. With Mary, let us take courage. We will climb the steep hill of Calvary so that, one day, we may savor the joys of eternal Beatitude.

“The highest veneration, after God, is due to Mary because there is no other being in Heaven or on earth arrayed in so sublime a dignity and so near to God as is Mary, the Mother of the Most High, the Spouse of the Holy Ghost. When Mary was on earth, She was exalted to the pre-eminent dignity of having the Son of God subject to her and, now in her full glorification, shall She behold her dignity lowered and the love of her Divine Spouse and Son, lessened? NO! On the contrary, She shall receive, as a reward for the love She bore her Divine Son on earth, the greatest participation in His Eternal Glory. She shall sit as His beloved Mother on the right Hand side of her Son, upon the throne of glory and majesty so that the whole heavenly court may offer to their Queen the eternal homage due her as the promised Victress over Hell by reason of the Fruit of her virginal body.”

Make haste to enroll your family and friends in the forty days of Holy Masses which prepare our hearts for Good Friday only to open them to the Joys of Easter Sunday!

The rational man needs the Mass to pay Almighty God the debt of homage and adoration he owes Him. The grateful man needs the Mass to pay his debt of thanksgiving. The sinful man, and who among us is without sin, needs the Mass to propitiate God’s Justice and to pay his debt of satisfaction. The needy man needs the Mass, that praying with Jesus Christ and through Him, he may offer a prayer that is worthy of being heard and, thus, discharge his duty and debt of petition.

At the hour of death, the Masses you have heard will be your greatest consolation. Every Mass will go with you to judgment and plead for pardon. At every Mass, you can diminish the temporal punishment due to your sins. Assisting devoutly at Mass, you render the Sacred Humanity of Jesus, the greatest homage. He supplies for many of your negligences and omissions. He forgives you all the venial sins you are determined to avoid. He forgives you all the unknown sins you have never confessed. The power of Satan over you is diminished.

By hearing Mass, you afford the Souls in Purgatory the greatest possible relief. One Mass heard by you, during life, will be of more benefit to you than many offered for you after death. Holy Mass preserves you from many dangers and misfortunes that would otherwise befall you. You shorten your Purgatory by every Mass and win for yourself a higher degree of glory in Heaven. At Mass, you kneel amidst the multitude of Angels who are present at the adorable Sacrifice with reverential awe. You receive the priest’s blessing which Our Lord Himself ratifies in Heaven. You are blessed in your temporal goods and affairs.

Share Your Gift of Faith

For centuries, our cherished Catholic faith has been passed from person to person, parent to child, etc. Each of us carries in our heart a special memory of how God first graced us with the knowledge of the faith and how Our Blessed Mother, Saint Philomena, Venerable Pauline Jaricot and other saints changed our lives and brought us closer to Christ.

In our work in the Universal Living Rosary Association, we see first hand how millions of souls are currently living without that knowledge of God and are living outside of His grace. We have been given a beautiful opportunity to carry out Christ's work and pass on our faith and blessings to others who would otherwise never be introduced to Our Lord, the Savior of all mankind. Just as we pray for the souls in Purgatory who have no one to pray for them, we should also make it a part of our life's mission to pass on our faith to as many souls as possible who have no one else to pass it on to them, who don't know Our Lord and His promise of salvation.
